can anyone tell me how to find out who was the registered landlord of the carpenters
arms inn,miserden, gloucestershire around 1800. Thanks.*COMPLETED*

Hi Sue,
I've checked with the local expert, Geoff SANDELS, and he states that the earliest Landlord, that he has a record of, at the Carpenters Arms in Miserden, is a J. SHEPPERD in 1856. The following is the website for Gloucestershire Pubs:-

Hi Victor,

Thank you for your reply, you have confirmed what we thought.That John Sheppard is ours and we think his father could  have been landlord before him. We undertand, that the village was owned by the Estate except the Church and the pub and wonder therefore,if  John Sheppard was a tenant landlord or owned the pub,as he was also a carpenter at the same premises.

Hi Sue,
I wasn't able to find out any further data about the Landlord of the Carpenters Arms, but I did find the following:-
Glos Archives (GA) GAL/G3
The Victoria History of the County of Gloucester, Volume XI, Pages 47-56.
This is a potted history of Miserden going back to virtually the year dot. I found no entry for the Carpenters Arms, but you can find masses of other data.
Try Googling the above volume.

Thanks very much for your reply and infomration.I shall certanily follow up your suggestion,as to date have been unable to find much info on Miserden,it only being a small village(advantage is we know all the Sheppards are ours!)

Just to confuse matters, thought you might be interested to learn that there are seven baptisms at Miserden listed to John & Elizabeth SHEPHERD between 1825 and 1847 (one of them a John, on 30/03/1833).
Also three baptisms listed to John & Elizabeth SHEPPARD between 1827 and 1840.
Strangely both the fathers are shown as carpenters by profession!
But you probably know all this already ...

Yes,however we are fairly confident,after checking the 1841 cencus, they are the same couple,just variants of the spelling of SHEPPARD.
