The Furze Family

Hi can anyone help why would a farmer, Robert Furze move from Devon to Essex in the 1890s. Was it a general trend of a one off. It seems strange as the family had lived in Devon/Somerset for hundreds of years.

perhaps he was fed up with rolling hills and wanted to live somewhere flat  .
seriously though theres lots of reasons i suppose a family tie to a farming family in essex a different type of farming not all counties even now grow the same type of crops different soils make a difference same with animals sheep living in say yorksire are used to different feeding grass to those in other parts of the country and wouldn,t survive lots of different variables i,d say for a chnge of life ,
what,s the life style you,ve found for him in your searches .

The same thing happened to my maternal grandfather's family around the same time frame.  They moved from Somerset to Tolworth in Surrey.  My grandfather was 'a bit of a lad' and my first thought was that either he or someone else in the family had disgraced the family in some way, causing them to move away.  The truth, which I eventually found after talking to a more senior cousin, was that the family moved in the hope of more prosperity - a huge new dairy had just opened in Tolworth, and the family moved there in the hope of getting better paid jobs.  Try researching the area of Essex that your ancestors moved to, and see if there was a new industry opening in the area which would have had a similar attraction.

I have only looked on the census returns so far but Robert Furze moved with his family from Churchstanton Devon in 1881 to Latton Essex by the 1891 census. I don't know how the farming was differnet or whether Essex was more profitable at that time, any ideas?

A few ideas spring to mind.....

1. Robert inherited some money from somewhere, and moved somewhere where you got more acres for his money ?   I notice that Robert describes himself as an employer in 1900.

2. Maybe Robert inherited the land in Essex ?  Any other Essex connections in the family ?

3. Robert's wife came from London.  Maybe they moved nearer to her family ?

Interesting to note that their first child was born in Dunmow, which is about 6 miles to the east of Bishops Stortford, whereas the others were born in Little Hallingbury, which is about 1 mile to the south of it.  Maybe they settled in Dunmow first ?

i tried posting earlier but it wouldn,t have any of it so here goes a third time .
at first it appeared to be most probably economics that made him move but if this is right i,m not so sure was roberts wife annie beatrice born dalston according to 1901 cen or have i got the wrong family if it is right that seems the more feasible reason for a move .
moving on as the 1901 cen if it,s correct has them living at bromleys farm latton  i did a google search for it just to see what may appear and some do come up for instance .

Hi Trevor,

Thanks for all your information you certainly have given me plenty to work on. I think the Robert Furze that moved to Essex was the father of Robert who married Anne, after the move. So you do have the correct family.

Some of the family still live around Dunmow and Bishop Stortford area now so interesting.
