Tasmanian Convict - Thomas King born 1813 Howden, Yorkshire
« on: Tuesday 03 July 12 10:57 BST (UK) »
Enquiring if anyone is researching Thomas King born in 1813 Howden in East Yorkshire, England.    Thomas was Convicted at York. East Riding Quarter Session for 7 years on 14 October 1833. [Transferred to Lady Kennaway at Cork in September 1834]Departure date: 4th July, 1834 on Norfolk Ship   Place of arrival: Van Diemen's Land.  I have traced him  being "free certifically" in 1846.  I have no trace of him after that. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks Merlin, I had seen the reference on the link you kindly gave - just a shame they are not available "on lione".    Thanks to tina and cando for the information.  I was hoping to "bump" into someone on here who was researching "King's" and had come across Thomas.

Cheers

All his records are available online I can read them all approx eleven pages. They are scanned copies of the original records which you can open & save to your own computer.

Hi, I am part of a local history forum and we have been trying to identify an old local character who was photographed in the early 1900's and known as Old Tas. I believe he might be your Thomas King. It has been a long and difficult journey by many members to identify him and we may not be correct. There were many convicts named Thomas King and it was a difficult task in the first place just discovering his name. One of our main clues right now is that he was buried as a RC. Do you know if the Thomas King that you are researching or his family were Catholic? We have identified 3 very interesting and great photographs of him (which we are happy to share) and I will be compiling a bit of background on Old Tas if we can properly identify this wonderful old local character. Any information you have would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

The King family  were all baptised/buried in Howden  Minster (CofE)  so as far as I am aware the family are not RC.  "My" Thomas King also had an alias Thomas Riley
