Hey Neil,

yes I quite understand about the accuracy of ancestry as I could've taken many different routes given the information that I received....I am a first timer at all this....just hope I am on the right track.
cheers JO

There is a death on Qld. BDM for 14 July 1900 for
Frances NEWTON, father Gille FONTAINI, mother Lavinia MORRIS
Reg 1900/C2445

C means it was in the country somewhere.  However in 1900 this could have been as close as Ipswich or as far away as Cooktown.

It's the only Frances Newton in 1900, BTW

Denys (France); Rossier/Rousseau (Switzerland); Montgomery (Antrim, IRL & North Sydney NSW);  Finn (Co.Carlow, IRL & NSW); Wilson (Leicestershire & NSW); Blue (Sydney NSW); Fisher & Barrago & Harrington(all Tipperary, IRL)

That's OK. You just sounded not sure, in your OP (original post) so just confirming it for you.
You could always contact Charters Towers Council to see if she's in their cemetery.  The CT Pioneer Cemetery goes only to 1895 and another was apparently opened in that year.

They don't seem to have their 'newer' cemetery online, but maybe they do and I just couldn't find it.

Jo....How do you know you have the correct death for your George NEWTON if you don't have any certificates?

Death
NEWTON George
Father Joseph  Mother Mary REDDEN
At Bendigo  28 years  1904  Reg#7550

Birth
NEWTON George
Father Joseph  Mother Mary RADDEN
At Sandhurst  1873  Reg#19852

Cando

George is buried at the same location as Joseph at Bendigo Cemetery.
http://www.bencemtrust.com.au/search.asp

To help your friend I have downloaded George's death cert...and it is a typical example of how one shouldn't base information on death certificates as fact.

George died on 30 Jun 1904 in the Bendigo Hospital from influenza and pneumonia 3 days.  His was a miner whose father was Joseph NEWTON and mother Mary NEWTON maiden name REDDEN.  He was buried in the Bendigo Cemetery on 3 Jul 1904 and the informant was the undertaker Thomas SAYER. George was born at Arnold Street, Bendigo and spent 7 years in Qld and 21 in Victoria.

I initially dismissed this registration as not being your George as according to the certificate, he married Alice FOSDYKE in Charters Towers when he was 21 years of age and issue of the marriage were Mabel 6 years and Bertram 4 years.

Taking into account that both George's parents were deceased I wonder who gave the undertaker the information.  I assume that Mabel is Frances Mabel b. 1898 and Bertram is George Herbert born 1900.

Unfortunately Qld certs are expensive.  What is the name of George's brother from whom your contact is descended?

I can find no marriage for a George NEWTON to an Alice FOSDYKE anyone on the Qld bdm's.

What do other chatters think?
