I REALLY need some help with research
« on: Tuesday 03 July 12 05:04 BST (UK) »
I am helping an aged care client desperatly trying to retrace his fathers' steps between the time he was born and being put into foster care.  His Father Herbert George Newton was placed in foster care in 1904 or 1906 with the Perkins family at Ucolta SA - Herbert was born 26th June 1900 to Frances (Fontaine) 1873 - 14th July 1900 and George Newton died 1904 in Bendigo.  There is a sister to Herbert - Frances Mabel Newton born 1898 whom I have no information at all on.
We are assuming that poor Frances had difficulties after giving birth to Herbert and died only 18 days later (we believe in Queensland) I have only recently found out that George died 4 years later in Bendigo sadly leaving the 2 children wards of the state??
There are so many questions unanswered......did George take the children with him to Bendigo, why weren't Herbert & Frances kept together, what happened to Frances, through what foster organisation was Herbert placed and what of extended family.  My client is not in good health and I really would like to get all this info for him.
If you have any information and the means of finding the info for me it would be so much appreciated.
Thank-you in advance
Jo

So we have Parents Francis newton (nee Fontaine) And George Newton.
Francis died 14th July1900 George in 1904
Two Children Francis Mabel Newton 1898 B Qld? and Herbert george Newton B 1900 Qld?

No news of whereabouts of Francis but Herbert was placed in foster care 1904? Went on to marry and had this son you are helping?

You have the marriage cert of George and Francis?

Do you have the DC's for Francis or George?

Hi Neil, thanks for your swifty reply - you have it all in a nut shell!
We have the details of Frances and George's wedding - 2nd March 1898.
No death certificates.  Herbert died in 1975 at Peterborough SA, married Hilda Eliza Clapp in 1922 and my client, Bernard Newton is their son.
I have researched this on ancestry dot com but hit a brick wall and we cancelled our subscription as it was getting too costly for Bernard, esp when we werent finding the information we needed. If you would like to view the tree it is public.

Do you actually have the marriage certificate? Or just the details from the previous thread? The marriage certificate would show the parents names of the Frances & George.

Why do you think George Newton who died 1904 at Bendigo is the correct one? Without his death certificate to match with his age, parents names, marriage & children. His parents would be named on the marriage certificate.

That death reg gives an age & parents names as such:

NEWTON Geo age 28yrs d. 1904 BGO #7550
Father: Newton Jos
Mother: Mary REDDEN

Sorry Cando - No red warning  ::)

There is a marriage in Qld for a Frances Newton in 1937 to a George Tomlinson Ref# 1936/B26192.

Doesn't look like correct parents though. So interstate NSW or Vic or SA. Maybe.

Maybe need at least one of those DC's. Lots of George Newton deaths in QLD.

Hi all, thank you for your replies. Ros we did question if George married again but no he didnt as I contacted people on ancestry who had George Newton and Ellen Elizabeth Mills listed in their trees.
Merlin, I found the marriage details on ancesty dot com but Frances is listed as Fanny Fontaine.
I was contacted by a lady a few days ago who is researching her great grandads family and she said that George was a brother to her grandad and it was from her that i have the death date and place.  We cancelled the subscription to ancestry and i am unable to check her tree for further updates - Williams Family Tree. I think Charters Towers is the place we need to look as the lady said there were a lot of Newtons there.
Cheers Jo

Mmmm Can't wait to get one in. Because it's on Ancestry.com doesn't make it correct. Paperwork and cross checks help, but black and white is best!
