 hi can anyone help please.

I have been drifiting with my Welsh connections. Recently found that John George Lewis b 1864 Haverfordwest ( Prendergast) didn't know his father, mother Martha Lewis b 1845. Martha married William Davies in 1868 and I am waiting for the marriage certificate to identify her father. They were living in Prospect Place and Cartlett Haverfordwest in different census. There appear to be three other children george b 1870 not on 1881 census, William Davies b 1881  and Edith Maud Davies b 1886 Has anyone got any ideas about this family as I am unable to find them after 1891 census.

John George Lewis went on to marry Jane Evans father John Evans b 1838 Haverfordwest. Can anyone confirm his parents are David Evans and Lettice ?Day. John Evans married Ann Swales in 1858 and they are easy to track down in each census, but I cannot find a marriage for a David and Lettice (also Lettie on census) who were both born around 1806/1810. They are possibly Methodist? Any help would be very welcome. renu

I notice that Edith is shown as Edith E M on the 1891 so will be Edith Ellen Maud

The 1901 has an Edith Ellen Davies b 1885 working as a servant in Pembrokeshire

John George Lewis was baptised at Prendergast in 1864, he is not listed IGI, so will check for details hopefully on Friday this week.
Prendergast is not in Haverfordwest, but is a separate village and parish in its own right.
Carlett is not in the parishes of H’west, but is in the parish of Prendergast, although I believe part of it was at one time in the parish of Uzmaston.
You are obtaining the mrge of Wm Davies to Martha Lewis, so will not bother to search for a copy in parish registers.
There are 3 baptism of a Martha Lewis, Prendergast 1844, Boulston 1845 and Rudbaxton 1846, you can download a parish map off the Pembs R.O. website if you need to see the relationship of these parishes. IGI shows 29 Sept 1844 at Prendergast to John & Elinor Lewis and 31 May 1846 at Rudbaxton to John & Elizabeth Lewis.
Edith Ellen Maude Davies was baptised at Prendergast in 1886
William Alfred Davies was baptised at Prendergast in 1881
I can locate no reference to the baptism of a George Davies circa 1870, the nearest being in 1878 the baptism of George Edwin Davies at Prendergast, however there is no reference in P.R.’s to him being aged 8 yrs at baptism which one would normally see for a baptism at such an age.
David Evans mrd Lettice Day at H’west St Mary 01 Jul 1828.
A John Evans was baptised at H’west St Mary in 1838 and another was baptised at H’west St Martin in 1839. IGI confirms the former baptised 01 Jan 1838 at H’west St Mary to David & Lettice Evans, therefore the 1839 entry at St Martin can be ignored.
I can not yet find any reference to the surname Swales before the baptism of Jane in 1858 at H’west St Martin. The surname is noted later at H’west St Thomas, Haroldstone St Issells and H’west St Mary.
I will check out some missing dates and get back to you.

You have been absoultly fabulous. It will be a few more days before I can confirm Martha's father but my 'gut feeling' is that she was baptised in the Haverfordwest/ Prendergast area I need to absorb the remainder of the information and tie it up with what I already have. Many many thanks.

PS I am hoping that once I know Martha's father I can connect our Lewis to Hubert William 'Stokey' Lewis. I know there is a connection as my mother and her father were close to him. We even have his walking stick. As yet haven't been able to make that connection. Again many thanks for a speedy response. Renu

I presume you refer to Hubert William Lewis V.C. ; from my research , Born at Milford Haven 1 May 1896. VC gazetted 15 Dec 1916. Mbr of 11th Bn The Welch Regt won the VC at Macukovo (today Efzóni, near Sérres in Greece on the Salonika Front), while on duty during a raid, Private Lewis was twice wounded on reaching the enemy trenches, but refused to be attended to. He was wounded again while searching enemy dug-outs and again refused assistance. At this point three of the enemy approached and Private Lewis immediately attacked them single-handed, capturing all three. Later, during the retirement, he went to the assistance of a wounded man and, under heavy shell and rifle fire, brought him back safely, after which he collapsed. Mbr of the Home Guard at Milford during W.W. II

His son Vernon Lewis ; The award of the DFM gazatted and back dated to 1943. Avro Lanc Mk III ED984 OL-A of the P.F.F. lost on op to Berlin. Airborne 2021 23 Aug 1943 from Wyton. Shot down by a night-fighter, crashed near Woltersdorf. Those killed are buried in the Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery. Their average age was 21 and as a PFF crew they had collectively amassed 330 operational flights. Two of the DFM holders had flown with other units, F/L Macpherson with No.9 Sqdn and W/O Baker with No.15 Sqdn. Hi,
just to let you know that I can confirm Martha Lewis's father was John Lewis b 1813 Tailor living (1851) at Scotchwell Street Cartlett Kilns, wife Elinor. John Lewis married Elinor Redgards in 1842 (possible she had a previous marriage as she has a son Edward Redgards b 1838 or he ws born out of wedlock and took on her surname which is the more likely as John Lewis's father in Law is with them in the census.

I had trouble finding the family in 1861 as John Lewis, Tailor had died before then and Elinor was being called Ellen living at 11 Cartlett Kilns ( I think sharing a house with a Thomas Vaughan & family) A witness to Martha's wedding was a Mary Vaughan.

I hope to be able to track John Lewis's family including Martha's siblings. The puzzle is starting to shape up.
