William Stewart/ Steuart???
« on: Sunday 01 July 12 21:09 BST (UK) »
Hi

My g(x4)grandparents were William Stewart & Grace/Grizel Mcintosh of Glenalbert, Little Dunkeld.  I have been looking for a death for William and have hit a brick wall.  I have him in the 1841 census:
address: Glenalbert

William Steuart         60  labourer
Grace  Steuart          60
Alexander Steuart    30
David Steuart           15 shoemaker journeyman

he doesnt seem to be around in the other census' so im presuming he died between 1841 and 1851?? I also cannot find a marriage for him marrying Grace/Grizel Mcintosh, so therefore I cannot find his parents. Can anyone please help? thank you.

Hi
Your surmise that William Stewart died bet. 1841-51 is correct as the 1851 census shows Grace Stewart to be a widow, aged 70, living in Glenalbert with unmarried sons William, a labourer aged 35, and Alexander aged 45, no occupation stated.  All born Little Dunkeld.
Family Search shows a son John b. 17 Feb. 1805 Little Dunkeld to William Stewart & Grizel McIntosh.

A "marriage record" for William & Grace, if it exists, would at that date just be a record of proclamation of Banns. They do not usually show the parents of bride or groom.  I would guess from the names of the sons that his father was John, and hers Alexander... but the traditional naming pattern does not always apply, so that is just a guess.

There are no OPR death records for Little Dunkeld, but burial records for the churchyard are held at Perth Crematorium (see Perth & Kinross council  Bereavement Services webpage for details), and the book  "Monumental inscriptions (pre-1855) in North Perthshire" contains inscriptions.

Hi Isabel

thank you for your time in checking the details out.  Yes I have John right up until when he died in 1887 and Alexander was living with him until he passed away.  i believe alexander didnt work so Im not sure if he couldnt because he was unable to through health or mental health??

grace died in 1855 and her death cert gives me all the children, etc.

unfortunately the naming pattern doesnt apply to Grace - her father was John, however thinking it over, you have given me the idea it could be that William's father may have been named Alexander!

Grace was buried in Logierait and I have been to this little churchyard to see if I can find her gravestone...unfortunately some of the stones are very old and have not weathered well, so I may just have to give perth Crematorium a phone.

Thank you once again for your help.
