Holy Trinity Churchyard, Dartford
« on: Sunday 01 July 12 13:31 BST (UK) »
I have found numerous burial records for my Stains family at Holy Trinity Church, Dartford and would like to visit Dartford later in the year. Whether there are headstones or not I would still want to go but I understand that some of the Churchyard has been built on and the road was widened.

I wondered if anyone knew what happened to any headstone etc?

I'm not aware of Holy Trinity ever having a graveyard. Over the road was the East Hill Cemetary, but that has since been cleared and is now a park. Further up East Hill is Brent Burial Ground and Watling Street Cemetary. You will more than likely find them there.

Let me know the names and death dates and I will look them up.

Some burial records for Dartford are included in the Way of Death Project imagebase on Medway Cityark.

Thanks for your replies TMA74 and bearkat

I have been right through the images at the Medway Cityark site for baptisms, burials and marriages and the problem with them is that there were two floods in  1766 and 1866 and registers up to those dates are flood damaged.
I have some baptisms and no burials and vice versa.  The burials I have are

Holy Trinity, Dartford  Burials
1775  [-----]  James the son of Robt and Phoebe Stains bur June 25th
1788 Staines, Sarah Staines Sept 20 (On same image as Phebe’s burial)
1788 Staines, Phoby the wife of Robert Staines bur Dec (day illegible - between the 4th and 10th – single digits)
1804 Staines, William Munn Dec 11
1805 Staines, Elizabeth Staines Dec 20
1808 Staines, Thomas Staines Oct 6
1813 Thomas Staines, Dartford 8 June age 29 by J Currey  (yob 1784)
1815 Robert Staines, Dartford May 10 age 25 by J Currey (yob 1790)
1824 Elizabeth Stains, Dartford Jan 27 35 years by E R Mantell  (yob 1789)
1829 Sara Stains, Dartford June 15, 13 [weeks or months] by W N Jackson
1829 Robt Stains, Dartford Nov 7 age 77 by W N Jackson (yob 1752)
1837 Charles Stains, Dartford August 14 age 41 by [W S] Grant vicar (yob 1796)
1842 Mary Ann Stains, Dartford, April 3 age Infant by [W S] Grant vicar

I am missing at least one Robert Stains/es who was on the Dartford 1801census, which I have on CD. Robert born c 1724 who was the father of Robert buried 1829 but I have other gaps where the registers are illegible.

The Kent Archaelogical Society MIs for Dartford don't have any Stain(e)s in their Leland Duncan listings from the "Upper burial Ground", now known as St Edmund's Pleasance, off East Hill.

I thought that as the burial registers I was looking at were for Holy Trinity that they would have had a churchyard but perhaps the funeral services were held there and they actually were buried elsewhere as you suggest TMA74.  I would appreciate any lookups you could do on the list above. I was rather hoping that any headstones I could find would fill in some of the gaps I have.

Thanks again
Anna

The records on the Way of Death Project only cover the period 1856-2006 so are too late for the records you are looking for.  :(

I did find a burial for one  of my stragglers Elizabeth Hopkins nee Stains who died in 1862 at Brent Cemetary  ;D I'd got her death certficate but the burial adds to the info I have and when I visit Dartford I can check her out.

Hope you have more luck, my one at the Brent didn't have a headstone.

That was the site I was going to check, the one bearkat gave you.

Looks like I'm scuppered  :'(  I phoned Holy Trinity and was told there was no chance of locating anyone who was buried at Holy Trinity at the Church itself.

There is one other posibility the NWKFHS have a listing of MI's. St Edmund's Burial Ground & Holy Trinity up to1844.  I've joined the society tonight so we will see.

Appreciate the suggestions.
