Immigration or American census lookup, please
« on: Saturday 30 June 12 18:42 BST (UK) »
I am almost at the tearing my hair out stage with my irish ancestors now, I have four branches all coming over and settling in England and yet not one gives a county of birth  >:(

My last hope is now pinned on my 3x gt Uncle but I can find no trace of him after his marriage in 1889, so was hoping some kind person could look up in the American census after this date, or possibly immigration records.

He was Patrick [Patt] Tafe / Taffe / Taafe / Taaffe, born Ireland in 1853, the son of James Tafe and Mary Byrne.
His siblings were James 1885 in Normandy, Alice 1858 in  Somerset, Peter 1864 in Liverpool and Thomas 1866 in Liverpool.
In 1889 Patrick married Mary Woods in Liverpool, and there the trail runs cold. I do hope someone can help as I've been looking for 9 years.
Many thanks

Hi Devaney1886,

Have looked at passenger lists for Patrick/Patk Taafe but not many at all showing for that timeframe I'm afraid. Of course there are so many spelling variations possible.
Early passenger lists have very little detail to be able to positively identify people but https://familysearch.org/ has a selection of census and other records that might help your search in the USA.

The first US census that Patrick and Mary could show on is the 1900 (1890 was almost entirely destroyed by fire) but nothing is springing out at the moment.  :(

Did the family have connections to the USA ?

Hi,
     Thank you for your time.
I think there is a loose connection there somewhere, as Patrick's brother's son moved to America and there was talk of meeting up with cousins, but I really don't know for sure. I guess I'm just taking a shot in the dark, as can find no later record of him in England.

I will check out the familysearch link for him.

Again many thanks for taking the time to help.

I have just found a death on family search for a little girl, Margaret Taff, parents Patrick Taff and Mary A Woods, both born in Ireland, so sounds like it could be them. They are living in Boston, Mass, and the year is 1897.  ;D

This looks like them in 1900:  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M9YS-ZCF

Also a son born after 1900:  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FXNK-6V5

Yes, just a step behind you - Mary Taff

Death of Mary 15 May 1909

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N4CP-YYM

Death of James P Taff 21 Oct 1893

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FH9V-XV3

Patrick is 16 years younger on the 1900 Census - born 1869  ???

Could be City Directory Entries that might be Patrick.  ???

You guys are amazingly helpful, thank you so much, but the census has put a spanner in the works as he is too young for my Patrick, and also they married in England, yet according to the census, Patrick had been in America since 1887 and married in 1889.
Mary's death kind of topped it off as her Father was also called Patrick; not John.

I really thought I was getting somewhere then as Tafe/ Taff is quite unusual, and combined with a 'Mary Woods', I really thought I had him.  :(

Alot of men did make themselves younger but coupled with the wrong name for Mary's father, that does put a spanner in the works.  Tragically they had had 4 children by that stage and all had died  :'( How sad  :'(

I know, so tragic. I can't imagine how people coped with such a loss, I found an unrelated one on the 1911 the other day who had had 12 children and they were all dead, along with her husband.
Gets to me every time  :'(
