the destroyed irish records make tracing relatives really frustrating. Hope someone can help. Francis Mannion from Galway married Bridget  Mulligan from Mayo around 1879 but there is no record of this.
 ( although a distant relative has an idea that maybe Bridgets maiden name was also Mannion and they may have been 2nd cousins- I'm not so sure) They probably emigrated to USA around 1880 because their first child John is listed in later census as being born in America. They obviously came back because they settled in Warrington Lancs UK, appearing on the 1891 census. At that time, john was 10, next child Mary was 8 and listed as being born in Lancs, so they must have returned between 1881 and 1883. On following censuses, Bridgets age varies so she could have been born anytime between 1855 and 1861. Frances age also varies on the census so he could have been born anytime between 1852 and 1860. they had 7 children, the youngest being James who was my husbands grandfather. Bridget died in Warrington in 1934 age 75, so this would back up the fact that her DOB was probably 1859. I dont have access to passengers lists for US emigration. My MiL has a vague recallection that there may be some Regans in the Mannion/ Mulligan families, some still in Ireland.
Does anyone have access to any information?

Where have you gotten the surname Mulligan from ?

Have you not gotten the birth cert for your husband's Grandfather James ?

This would give his mother's maiden name !

This can be ordered by post through our GRO in Roscommon

This will give you their father's names and occupations, and where the couple were living when they married, and of course the church that they married in.

When you get the name of the church, it might be worth contacting them to see if there was a dispensation against their marriage. This will tell you if they were actually related or not, and how closely.

I had a quick look at ifhf and it's free index also show this couple marrying in 1878 in Milltown RC Church - these transcriptions cost about 5 euro to view.

thanks for replies Tara. The person with the family tree on Ancestry is the distant relative who is investigating the Mannion/Mannion route rather than mannion/Mulligan. I had a eureka moment when you mentioned Grandads birth cert as my MiL, who is still alive, has some documents she keeps at our house. I looked today and there it is, the birth cert, showing that grandads mother was indeed Bridget Mannion, formerly Mulligan. So, now I know which name to research, but still dont have any further information. The only clue I have is that on one census Bridgets birth place is listed as Meo, which I presume means Mayo, but Co Mayo is a big place, so not sure where to look.

It still might be worth you ordering the marriage cert of Francis Mannion to Bridget Mannion.

There is a possibility that MAYBE she was born Bridget Mulligan but was married to a Mannion, was widowed and then married Francis Mannion.

In this scenario she would have married Francis under her first marriage name which would have been Mannion.

Any children born to her with Francis would of course have her maiden name of Mulligan on it.

While I can't say that this scenario is correct, it would be worth getting the cert for 4 euro to see if the Bridget Mannion that married Francis Mannion was a widow. If so it would have her father's name on it, fingers crossed a Mr Mulligan.

This might explain the family story that Bridget and Francis were related. Maybe she was first married to a relation of his ?

I think once you have her marriage sorted out, only then will you be able to look for her in Mayo, as you will then have a father's name and occupation.

thanks for quick rply tara. Any avenue is worth exploring so I think I'll do as you suggest. I still could do with supplying more details than I have got though. All I have is a little vague, I dont even know if they were married in Ireland or maybe went to US separately, married there and then moved to UK after the birth of their first child.

Hi,

Sometimes in cases like this, where things are vague, you really are better off to start again from scratch and double check everything.

Start with your hubby, his parents marriage and birth certs, then his grandparents marriages and birth certs.

Double check that everything is in order and correct and correlating with any relevant census.

Then you can work back another generation in the knowledge that your paperwork is correct and that you are looking for the correct people and new paperwork.

It can be all to easy to go back generations too quickly under incorrect assumptions.

thanks Tara. well, I'm not a football fan, so whilst hubby is watching I've been very busy. I've found them! Or at least I found out that they were married in Warrington in 1878. record Vol 8c, page 185.  The problem was that Francis surname is spelt Manion, not Mannion. I'm so glad I found it. Dont know yet how they both came to be in Warrington as there is no trace of them, although there are dozens of Mannions/ Manions in the 1871 census who came from Ireland, some even from Galway. There seems to be a large contingent of them around the Holy Trinity/ St Elphins area which are both close together.
So, now I know the details I can send for the marriage cert. I must knock off though now, I've spent hours on this today, it really gets you in a grip doesn't it?
