Could you please give more information on names, year and place of birth.  There are over 125 of this surname in Leicester on the 1911 index and over 600 in Kent.  :-\

And of course the -by on the end of the name suggests that's its a geographic description in origin (a place near ash forests/trees ) . There is no reason to suggest that they originated from a single place.

Hello all,  Thankyou to rosie & pauline for your quick replies, I know I made a very generalised plea but I guess the info I'm looking for is much earlier than census material. I have records (Sussex Weald Gen.) back to John Ashby b.11 Nov. 1592. in Rotherfield, m. Jone Hilder. Then through A***y I have unproven lineage back to John de Ashby b.1341 in Ashby Magma, Leicestershire.(m. Alice de Albiny) This data then leads back to Phillip de Sassfrid Ashby. etc. Is there any truth to this direct line, and how do I prove it? I have tried different sources, official family trees, open web searches many of which seem to go right down to the very generation I need then stop, making me rather suspicious of the veracity of the other peoples trees. ie I ca'nt find any evidence to support them; and where did they get the original idea from, or are we all copying the same misinformation perpetrated by some genealogy fiend ? HELP Please.   Regards Alan

There are many posts on rootschat referring to imaginary ancestors on Anc* family trees, I think most of us can find at least one record on there which has been copied by many people without checking. In many cases it is probably that people believe all BMD records are available on the internet so if this one matches then it must be mine regardless of the location. Having had a brief look at trees on your John Ashby I see some people have him bn Sussex and dying in Northamptonshire and in the case of this one Born in 1592 and dying in 1795 (age over 200)
John Ashby
Birth:  1592 - East Sussex (Sussex), England
Death:  1795-09 (Sep 1795) - Rotherfield, East Sussex (Sussex), England
Spouse:  Jone Hilder

I will come back to this later as I have to go out now.
Rosie :)
