Michaelstowe Hall - Ramsey

Does anyone know the history of Michaelstowe Hall please?  We are particularly interested in the owners in the 1850's and 60's.

SEAX, the online index of the Essex Record Office, shows they have extensive holdings of estate and manorial records for Michaelstow Hall. (Note, no 'E').  A Full Text search for the word Michaelstow at http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp gets 40 hits.
One document dated 1854 refers to Edgar W.Garland of Michaelstow Hall, Ramsey, Lord of the Manor of Dovercourt.  The same information is confirmed in White's Directory of Essex, 1848, and the P.O.Directory of Essex, 1851.  The P.O.Directory of Essex, 1862, lists him as Lord of the Manor and one of the principal landowners, but not as resident.

I am still interested in Michaelstowe Hall, as several members of my maternal grandmother's family worked there, either in service at the Hall, or on the farm. I had one photo, since passed to my daughter, of the staff at the Hall, indoor and outdoor, outside the front of the Hall, sometime, I would think in the 1880's, and I have still some photos of my great-grandfather, Charlie Barfield, working on the sail reaper, about the same time. My family lived in Nelson Cottage, owned then by the estate, down in Ramsey (it was sold, out of the family I think, about ten years ago).
My interest in the owners/tenants of Hall, is trying to work out if there is a connection between them and the areas of West Essex/East London where several members of my family moved in the 1860's. I am also trying to sort out the parentage of my great-grandmother, who appears to have a mother, but no father in the records (her grandfather is sometimes listed as her father; hmm!)

The Other book i have shows a hunt meet at the hall 1911, there is also a picture of squire garland
and his family 1913 there alre also pictures of the crew of hms blanche 1913

The first recorded date for Michaelstowe Manor is 1379. In 1639 the Darvall family owned it. Michaelstowe Hall was re-built for Squire Garland in 1903, in 1920 it was sold to Richard Coombe Abdy.  During WW2 it was variously, a convalescent home, military camp, and officers club. In 1946 it became an approved school known as Chafford school. It is now a residential home for the elderly.
Barfield was a local name, I went to Ramsey school in the 1950's with a George Barfield who lived in Ramsey.
Nelson Cottage, I assume was/is close to The lord Nelson Public House?

I certainly remember my great-aunts and uncles talking about the "good old days" of Squire Garland, and the differences under (was it Captain?) Abdy.
As you say, Barfield was a very common local name. The only George I know of was 1880 to 1958, so you weren't at school with him! I doubt very much if most of my great-uncles ever went to school! But there are descendants of other Barfields who might fit the bill of your George. Do you happen to recall his parents' names?
Nelson Cottage was almost directly opposite the Lord Nelson. My great-grandparents brought up their 12 children there, with just two bedrooms. The parents had one, the girls had the other, and the boys were boarded out next door as soon as they were weaned! The cottage has been extended over the years, and is now quite gentrified!

Actually the only surname in your list that I am not personally familiar with  locally is the name Grant.
I drive through Ramsey a couple of times a week, so if you need any modern local photographs let me know.
I live a mile or so from Ramsey at Tollgate, although I was born in Little Oakley.
Sorry, I don't know the name of George's parents, I only remember him from Ramsey school, but he did live in Ramsey. There was also a (Ron?) Barfield who was a plumber with a local company, Gordon's I believe, he would probably be in his mid-eighties or probably more by now.
