WW1 Memorial
« on: Friday 29 June 12 09:57 BST (UK) »
Hi there!

I have 2 great uncles (brothers) who died in France in WW1, I have been trying to find a war memorial with possibly their names on but not been successful!

Do war memorials have the names of where the soldier was born or where he came from at the time of enlisting? And do all memorials have individual names on them?

Many thanks! :)

The war memorial will usually only have the name. If you give us a little more information we may be able to help. Have you looked at the CWGC  http://www.cwgc.org/

Type in your soldiers name and if there it will bring up his details- Name, date of death, service number, regiment, graveyard and grave number. There is sometimes some personal info, for instance one of my gt uncles has his parents and where they were living.
If you then want someone on here to check if he has any Military records or medal card, get back to us...

The mem.orial you are looking for will most likely be in their home parish, so try to locate this using the 1911 census or other info - the CWGC site may well also give you a pointer.

There may be/may have been a memorial at their previous place of work: as an example I walk past a memorial every time I go to our local Post Office. Again try finding their occupation and therefore if you are lucky place of work from the census. Schools and universities also set up their own war memorials - worth trying to trace those, too.

But as stated in the previous post all you are likely to get is a name, perhaps only surname and initials; some memorials also give rank, decorations and unit, but it's not all that common. I've been an interested observer on the edges of the periphery of a memorial to a more recent conflict and there was a deliberate decision to list only initials and surname in alphabetical order.

Sorry Graham I modified and our posts must have crossed, then for some reason Roots would not let me post...
