good day whitey,

That would be a fairly common name. Have you contacted the Toronto Public Library to ask them for a lookup for him in thier newspaper archives?

Toronto Star - Pages of the Past
It is a pay site but reasonable rates, (monthly, daily, hourly).  You might find an obituary published in the Toronto paper - I guess it depends on how close to Toronto you think he was living.

You could also try the Toronto library - Ask a Librarian feature.  They can do lookups in their city directories which might narrow down the timeframe of death if he lived in Toronto.

Obit for Fred A Smith in the Globe and Mail, 23 Jan 1956, page 27.

It says that Fred A Smith died at Long Branch on Sunday 22 Jan 1956.  Husband of Ivy Rutler of 96 27th Street Long Branch.   Father of L E*, at home, and Irene (Mrs G M Whiteside) of Strathroy.   Brother of Rose Jeffries of Long Branch.   Uncle of B* and F* Jeffries.   Interment Glendale Memorial Gardens.

*Amended to remove full names of people who are likely still living.   Thanks Sandra :)

The second wife Ivy was Ivy Elizabeth Emma Rutter born 1908 Camberwell to Charles Stuart Rutter and Elizabeth.  All three, Charles, Elizabeth and Ivy appear together 25 Bourneville Road, Lewisham, London - 1932 London Electoral Register.

UK and Ireland outward passenger list - Ivy Rutter born 1908 and aged 38 years of 23 Church Rise, Forest Hill- secretary, travelling on the America, departing Southampton 23 November 1946 to  destination port USA.
Intended destination Canada.

The daughter "L.E " mentioned in the obit of Fred is married and probably still lives in Strathroy.
