Douglas Seymour Long birth
« on: Tuesday 26 June 12 00:29 BST (UK) »
Hi all
I'm trying to confirm the birth place of my grand uncle Douglas Seymour Long.

On 1911 census he is in St. Edward's Orphanage West Malvern Ledbury Herefordshire England and it said he was born in South Africa.

On his death certificate date of birth is 25 August 1902 he died 22 June 1981 Cheltenham Gloucestershire England he was at his sister's house but he lived in Birmingham England.

I can not find his birth in the England.

So was hoping someone can help to see if he was born in South Africa then if he was I only have to work out why the family where out in South Africa!!!

Joy

Hi Trevor
Thank you for the reply Douglas parents
Alfred George Long B: 20 Sept 1855 Sotton Veny Wiltshire
Ada Emily Long nee Tanner B: 5 Nov 1862 Writhlington Somerset. On birth certificate she is down as Emily Ada but married as Ada Emily her mother was Emily.

I have them on all the census up to 1901 they are all together still but moved around, in 1901 living Smithwick. Aflred was married before he married Ada his first wife died of TB.

The last child was born in 1905 then it gets to my brick wall in 1911 have found the whole family living Aston Birmingham but Douglas and his brother Kenneth Walter Long in the orphanage together my grand father was in the navy he joined up when he was 15 yrs. Can not find Alfred George Long at all in 1911 not sure if he died by then he is done as deceased on my grandfathers marriage certificate in 1923.

I can not find Douglas birth and the only hint is on 1911 census where it said South Africa but for his brother it had birth place unknow but he had changed his name around from Walter Kenneth Long to Kenneth Walter Long.

Have all the information on the family expect Douglas birth place and the death of his parents (which is my other brick wall). My grandfather never talked about his family and only ever meet up with his brothers away from home they are all dead now.

I have not found them on any passenger list but one of Afred's brothers was in the army and in South Africa fighting 1901 Seymour Worthington Long.

Any help or ideas would be of great help :)

Hi Trevor,

Yes I did see that entry but as his last daughter was born in 1905 dismissed it.

Thanks for information about Seymour in the boar war that fits into his service record as he is a driver.

 Hi Joy

While trying to find a relative/parent for Elizabeth Joan Long C1912/15 who we believe was from Gloucestershire with South African links we came across Douglas.

I see you are looking for his mother (in later life) and just in case you had not seen it I found Douglas and Kenneth with Ada Emily Long, Dorothy Gwendoline Long and Margaret Primrose Long on the 1930 Birmingham Electoral Register living at 56 Wyndcliff Road Yardley.

Have you come across Elizabeth Joan Long, married to Donald Cliff Harcombe 1937 in your research.  I believe her mother may be MacKintee and she may have been born in Cheltenham.
