Mary Ann Eustace & Michael Hughes Marriage
« on: Monday 25 June 12 14:28 BST (UK) »
Hello, I am trying to find details of the marriage of Mary Ann Eustace & Michael Hughes.

They were both born in Liverpool, Mary in about 1854 and Michael in about 1843.

Their first born son, John Eustace Hughes, born 25 April 1876, was baptised at St Sylvester (Sylvestri), Lancashire on 27 April 1876 which suggests that theirs was a Catholic Marriage.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, John

Had a good look through the usual sources but don't see anything at all.

They had 5 children baptised at St. Peter's Priory Roman Catholic Church, Seel Street, which would also confirm a Catholic marriage, but where ???

I've not searched for Catholic marriages before, but I have found 1 which might be worth a look,

In Ireland Civil registration indexes for Dublin South in 1874 a Michael Hughes & a Mary Anne Eustace both sharing the same Digital Folder No. & Film Number, perhaps they went to Ireland for family reasons. Perhaps someone on Rootschat with more experience of the Irish BMD's might have a look at this entry, though I could be completely wrong of course.

That's a good find, Colin. :)

Not entirely related - but it's odd how the 1881 census claims that Michael was 30 years old. The 1891 states he was 52 years of age, whereas ten years later in 1901 he was only 58. The last census is consistent with the 1901.

Hello Colin, thank you for your reply, that's just brilliant.

I've since found a site called Irish Genealogy Toolkit and through their search engine have found the entries that you mentioned and have emailed for further advice.

I shall let you know the outcome.

Thanks again.

Further to Pels observations (and thank you for those) about the Census anomalies. I wonder if the combination Scouse/Irish accent of my ancestor confused the Census collector!

Coincidentally, the marriage certificate transcription on Ancestry of John Eustace Hughes was shown as  John Isabella Hughes!

Hello again Colin, further to my previous reply with regard to the Irish connection, I've just received an email from a very helpful lady, Claire, at Irish-genealogy-toolkit.com who has confirmed that although they share the same Digital Folder and Film Number, the different volume and page numbers show that the two marriage records do not relate to the same marriage.

So it's back to the drawing board, again!

Thanks for trying

Best regards, John

Hello, I am still trying to find details of the marriage of Mary Ann Eustace & Michael Hughes.

They were both born in Liverpool, Mary on 8th November 1851 and Michael on 3rd August 1843.

Their first born son, John Eustace Hughes, born 25 April 1876, was baptised at St Sylvester (Sylvestri), Lancashire on 27 April 1876 which suggests that theirs was a Catholic Marriage.

On 26th June 2012, I received a reply to my original request from Colin D Gronow:

'They had 5 children baptised at St. Peter's Priory Roman Catholic Church, Seel Street, which would also confirm a Catholic marriage, but where?

I've not searched for Catholic marriages before, but I have found 1 which might be worth a look,

Almost 8 years have elapsed and I am no further on!

Any inspired (or otherwise!) thoughts, please?

Thank you
