Uniform Identification
« on: Monday 25 June 12 11:32 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me?  This is my great-grandfather, Samuel Turner, and I was told that he served in the Royal Scots Fusiliers.  I would guess that this is some time in the 1870's but I haven't found a service record yet and just don't have much info to go on.  He was born around 1845 in or near Dudley, Worcestershire. Thanks in advance.

if scots guards then you will need to get in touch with the regimental museum and ask them for a look up for his service record as all guards regts keep there own records not like the ordinary regts records which are online at find my past  but originally with chelsea hospital .

thank you so much - now I know where to look!  I'm sending off a letter to the archivist tomorrow.  In case anyone else is looking they prefer that you write http://www.theguardsmuseum.com/Family-Research

By way of explanation, the Scots Guards were called the 'Scots Fusilier Guards' before 1877

The two chevrons above his right cuff are Goood Conduct 'Badges'. They changed to the left cuff in about 1881 - so confirmation that it is from c1870s.

Each badge gave him one penny a day extra pay.

I have had an initial response from the Archivist.  They have a research fee of £30 and they hold Soldiers Pension and Non pension records for the period 1799-1929. I am waiting now for their response.  If anyone else wants to contact them here is the address
