Thankyou all, you must be up early !! (or late). It hadn't registered that of the two marriages for Alexander Mackey, first to Mary Jane Cummins and then to Sarah Hinds, that the father's name was different. Alexander was recorded as a widower when he married Sarah and I jumped to the wrong conclusion. Though I wonder if the record has been transcribed correctly, or perhaps a misunderstanding with the vicar (I'm clutching at straws). Alexander was definitely a farmer, not a shoemaker, however his son Edmund became a shoemaker (I have sent for a marriage certificate for him, so hopefully I've got the right one). Kingskerswell, where did you find the birth record for Edmund, 1868? (are you from Devon, with a name like that ). I found the passenger list for Valentine, going to America in 1892. I have requested a researcher ot look up the Royal Irish Constabulary records for Alexander junior, you never know, it might turn up something on his birth. Regards Moya
