John Gray, 1737, Slamannan
« on: Sunday 24 June 12 17:21 BST (UK) »
John Gray, tenant, Balmitchell farm, Slamannan, died August 1737. It appears that he was the youngest son of Patrick Gray, Wester Straith. John had 3 sons, Patrick, the eldest; Alexander, wester Midlerig (executor); John, of Baxton, Muiravonside. This information comes from his will.
My Main ancestors farmed at Balmitchell and I have found that there has been a connection between the Gray family and the Main family. There were two Jannet Mains having families in the 1730s and 40s, William Forrest/ Jannet Main, and John Gray/ Jannet Main.
There are two possible sets of parents for both Jannets: David Main/ Beatrix Ritchie and William Main/ Janet Robertson.
These two couples had a John, Janet and William. David/ Beatrix had John 1714; Janet 1714; William 1722, while William/ Janet had John 1713; Janet 1714; William 1717, and these names (John and William) show up as witnesses at the baptisms. There is also a James Waddell that appears as a witness for William Forrest/ Jannet Main’s child. I’m at a dead end as far as unraveling these families. I would appreciate hearing from anyone with knowledge of the Gray family.

I am descended from the Grays of Strath, and I know of a John Gray (d 1737), son of Patrick (who owned Midlerig), brother of Patrick, Alexander and James; and husband of Agnes Ewing. It looks like we have the same family! Most of the information on the Gray family that I have from that time comes from legal instruments recorded in Sasines. Email me at (*) and I can tell you all I know.

Peter Gray
