Timothy Hayes from the Eureka Stockade
« on: Thursday 21 June 12 02:16 BST (UK) »
Hi All
I am searching for descendents of Timothy and Anastasia Hayes and in particular a death date for Timothy who was reported to have died in Melbourne Australia. Any information would be appreciated.
Anastasia died at Ballarat 1892. The Eureka Stockade rebellion was 1854.
Regards Olive

Hello Olive,

Coincidence here.

I have just finished reading  "The Tin Ticket" by Deborah J Swiss and there is mention of Anastasia Hayes at the time of the Eureka Hotel fire and her involvement with two other women in making the Blue and White Flag of the Southern Cross.
No mention of Timothy but a very worthwhile read.

Maureen.

There are a few deaths for Timothy HAYES on the Victorian Index.
From the death notice of Anastasia HAYES in 1892 she is referred to as the relict of Timothy HAYES.
This might be his death from the Victorian Index.
1873, Victoria,Timothy Hayes, age 53, mother and fathers name not recorded , Rego 7842

Thank you to the posters who have replied. Poor John Hayes was unlucky with his potential for continuing his family tree.
I have been unable to find Ardale where Timothy died. Would that be an abbreviation for Armadale?
There was a daughter so far not mentioned Helena or Ellen who married Dennis Desmond.
Anastasia was a "firebrand" and stood firm when Timothy was taken away to stand trial for treason as a result of the Eureka Stockade event. She, along with two others, is credited with sewing the Eureka flag
He was found not guilty and returned to Ballarat and became a policeman before deserting Anastasia and family and going to South America. After his return he worked on the railway.Would appreciate any more info on any member of this family.
He had a brother Patrick who was a Manufacturing Chemist in Melbourne. I have used Trove extensively and will look forward to more newspapers going on line.
Cheers to you all and thanks
Olive
