Oh my goodness...
« on: Tuesday 19 June 12 11:34 BST (UK) »
Whilst looking to see if there were any records for my ancestors on the british newspaper archive... I came across an entry which I think is my 2nd Great Grandfather...

Monday 22 November 1886 - Shocking depravity at Castleford - On Saturday, Charles William Poskitt, 11 years of age of Castleford, was charged at Pontefract with mutilating a little girl named Whittington, on the 17th Sept. The girl still remains unable to walk, she hd to be carried into court. The particulars were of a most re-volting nature. The boy was remanded until Wednesday.

The Charles William Poskitt I have on my family tree was born Oct/Nov/Dec 1875 in Glasshoughton... Which would tie in with the age and location.

How would I find out if this was my Charles William Poskitt? I'd love to know what happened to this case and what happened to him as my Charles William Poskitt married aged 19 in 1894, but I can't find him on the 1891 census...

Cheers for that! Never thought to look for a different surname. Ooops!

I'd love to know if this is my Charles William though. What are the odds of there being two Charles William Poskitts aged 11 in Castleford at the same time?

If he's out and about in Castleford, only 6 years after the attack, my guess is that it's not the same person.

Hi

There is nothing on the Criminal Register 1791-1892 for a Charles William Poskitt

This is my thinking also Mike, if I had found him in a work house or somewhere in 1891 then I'd be sure it's the same person. But this has filled me with doubt.

Also, i looked some more on the newspaper website and found this:

EXTRAORDINARY ASSAULT BY A LITTLE BOY. - At the West Riding Police Court, Pontefract, on Saturday, Charles William Poskitt, elevens years of age, son of Charles Poskitt, collier, Castleford was charged on warrant with an aggravated assault on Sarah Ellen Whittington, aged six, the daughter of Richard Whittington, collier, on September 17th. The prisoner threw the poor little girl down a stone heap and nipped such pieces from her body as to cause very dangerous illness and which still keeps her confined to her room. The prisoner was remanded till Wednesday to the workhouse for medical and other evidence.

My Charles William Poskitt's father was William Poskitt, not Charles... Another indication this might not be the same kid... Except I can't seem to find another Charles William Poskitt (b1875) with a father called Charles anywhere?!

It sounds horrific and shows that there's nothing new about some of today's high profile cases.
