John Bolton, Solicitor - buried where?
« on: Sunday 17 June 12 16:31 BST (UK) »
Hi all

My ancestor John Bolton died 18th Dec 1862 in Milverton, Leamington, Warwickshire. He was buried on the 23rd Dec 1862 at Leamington Priors according to the burial entry I located on Ancestry. What I'm trying to work out is which churchyard this is likely to be. I have been informed that Leamington Spa cemetery didn't open until 1868 and prior to this it was a churchyard (known as Brunswick Street) attached to All Saints, the parish church for Leamington spa.

How can I find out if this was the churchyard he was buried in? Are there other records I can have checked? (I live in Australia). A kind soul at the council has checked MI's for this churchyard from 1993 but there is nothing for John. As he was a solicitor and had effects of under £10000 I thought there may have been a headstone wherever he was buried.

Appreciate any thoughts, advice or help with this!!

You have answered your own question!
There is a MI for a Bolton in Brunswick Street but you have to buy a fiche to find out a Christian name.
Perhaps a request to the Leamington Courier or the Leamington Library may 'solicit' an answer, he would be regarded as important and would be sure to have details of his funeral in the local press.

Hi Al in Vane

Sometimes it's hard to get the gist of places when you're a long way away! I found that Leamington priors was a village but didn't know what the church was called or if there was more than one and so which churchyard I might find John in.

Is Leamington Priors the same place as Leamington Spa??  Most of the time a burial register lists the church name and the village or parish but this one confused me as there was no church name!!

I figured SKS would enlighten me so thankyou very much! Also appreciate the info on the MI for a Bolton but having had the lady at the council check the MI's and not finding my John, perhaps this is another with the same surname.

Thanks
Carolyn

Hi Carolyn

Yes Leamington Spa was Leamingto Priors initially.  Check out its history on-line:

http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=57117

He may well be buried in one of the closed churchyards, for which Warwick District Council holds no records of burials.  It might be worth contacting Warwickshire Local Hisotry Society via www.warwickshirehistory.org.uk, but I bet one of the really helpful local RC's will try to come up with something for you!

Best wishes

Hugs

Thanks Hugs now I understand the town name  better! Closed churchyard info is fantastic as it gives me somewhere to start looking. Thankyou for your leads, fingers crossed I find him. :D

In your shoes Carolyn I would next email the Leamington Library, have found them very helpful in the past and one of the local newspapers of the time would bound to have a report of his funeral.
