William Fisher and Elizabeth Carey
« on: Sunday 17 June 12 12:19 BST (UK) »
I wonder if any one can give me any help with William Fisher and Elizabeth Carey who married according to FamilySearch in St Nicholas Abingdon on 18th Dec 1770.

I think this couple had a son, William Fisher, b. abt 1780 who, in 1851 census, says he is from Abingdon, Berkshire. He is living then in Sheffield, Yorkshire where he has a wife Rebecca, who says she is from Sunderland.

Any ideas gratefully received!

Jill

Hello Jill23

Welcome to Rootschat.

There is certainly a William Fisher baptised on 17 Feb 1773 St Nicholas Abingdon on Familysearch s/o William & Elizabeth

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N679-Y72

The parish records for Abingdon are held by Oxfordshire so it may be worth posting on the Oxfordshire board & someone may be able to look up the parish transcripts for the marriage & births for you, there may be some further clues in these

Hope this help

Hi

I am afraid it might not be that simple - there are two baptisms in the regsters of St Helens Abingdon

1780 May 16th William son of William & Mary Fisher - gardener

1780 23rd Nov William son of William & Elizabeth Fisher, lab

I can't see immeadiatly a burial as an infant for either of these,  so unless you know 'your' William's mother was Elizabeth he could be either

 :-\

The full marriage record from st Nicholas reads

Dec 18th 1770   by banns
William Fisher of Blewbery Berks (bach)
to
Elizabeth Carey sp OTP
witnesses Thomas Cox & Robert Wace

Thanks for all the replies, particularly DebbieG with those marriage details. I have very little information to go on so it all helps even if only to disprove a theory.
William (the son in Sheffield), his first child was called Elizabeth, so maybe his mother was Elizabeth???. I have just had a quick look at the 1841 census to see if there were any Fishers in Blewbury but so much is not transcribed as the writing is faded. So no luck with any other Fishers! As I can't find out his wife's maiden name either and I don't know where they married can't send for any certs.

I have a big bruise from banging against this wall  :'(

Hi,
I hope you don't mind me coming in here, but the entry posted by Paul
which,  according to the Familysearch is  correct, is in fact incorrect as the transcripts for St.Nicholas, Abingdon  list as follows;
7 Feb 1773 William Fisher s/o Henry & Elizabeth.

I realise this is not important in this case but should anyone else be looking
I thought I would post in case.

Hi Alan, I don't mind you joining in at all.

I would not be surprised if there was a mistake on Familysearch.org having done some indexing for them, I have experienced at first hand their mistakes. (In Essex I have some relatives indexed to the wrong village name!)

Anyway, I have spent some time going thro' the 1841 census looking for Fishers in St Helens and St Nicholas area of Abingdon and I have found loads, especially living in Ock Street. All I've got to do now is look for a link...

I wish!

The parish records for Abingdon are held by Oxfordshire so it may be worth posting on the Oxfordshire board & someone may be able to look up the parish transcripts for the marriage & births for you, there may be some further clues in these
The parish registers for St Helen's and others are held at the church, they have not been deposited with a record office.  Registers from St Nicholas have been deposited in the Berkshire Record Office, which is the archive for the Archdeaconry of Berkshire. The church has not echoed the change in the civil boundaries of Berkshire - so Abingdon is still in Berkshire as far as they are concerned.

Transcripts have been published by Oxfordshire FHS, copies are available in Berkshire and Oxfordshire ROs.
