Phillips Alfred
« on: Thursday 14 June 12 17:10 BST (UK) »
Alfred Phillips emigrated from Liverpool, UK to Montreal, Canada 1921
Surnames: Phillips / May
I am hoping someone can help provide info about my relative Alfred (Alfie) Phillips, (possibly also known as Alfred May) He was born in Liverpool in Dec 1908 and emigrated in 1921, aged 12 as part of the Barnardo's (Nugent Care as it was then known) Home Children Farming Program. We know he was placed on a farm in the Montreal area and stayed there until 1927 when he moved on. After that we don't know where he went. Would love to hear from anyone who might be related to him or can provide any info whatsoever.

Hi there,

Can you give us a bit more info please ...

Do you have the names of his parents in case this helps?

Have you found him on a passenger list? If so can you give his date of arrival and the ship he was on?

I have only found one 12 year old child arriving 1921 to Canada and he was going to the St George Home in Ottawa which was generally connected to the Catholic Emigration Society? His name was Alfred Phillips and he was b. in Liverpool. This info was on his Form 30A. I didn't find any relevant Alfred Mays in the passenger lists.

I found the industrial records from the industrial school with the following informations:
22nd July 1921
John Fisher, Alfred Phillips, Peter Kearns, John Nolan - left for Canada on the SS Minnedosa under the auspices of the Catholic Emigration Society. The boys had a rousing send off and each received a present from the boys and staff.

We have this from http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/home-children
Surname: May
Given Name: Alfred
Age: 14
Sex: M
Ship: Minnedosa
Year of Arrival: 1923
Departure Port: Southampton
Departure Date: 1923-07-19
Arrival Port: Quebec
Arrival Date: 1923-07-26
Party: Barnardo Homes
Destination: Toronto and Peterborough, Ontario
We also have reports that another realative has given us, from the Catholic Emmigration society, going up to 1926, from the farm from where Alfred was working : (An extract):
Now my recent research, shows he was at La Prairie (nearest town Hemmingford) and around 1922/23 they have marked on Alfred’s annual report, that ‘ He often hears from his brother who crosses over from New York to Montreal’ - This was Albert

Ah - just looking at the information you have given me about the Alfred Phillips arriving in 1921, ties in with the date of 1921 from the industrial school records that I had - so the one from 1923 that we had was not the correct one - so he was always Alfred Phillips! We are all quite new to this - so this really helps - thank you!

Hi again,

Yes, I can read that record.   It is rather sad...

There is a thread in the Rootschat Canada Resources section that has helpful links for researching Home Children.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=355348.0

If Alfred remained in the Montreal area, you can look in the Montreal City Directories for him.  Maybe an address or a profession might ring a bell??  Choose serie principale, then it is mostly English after that.

I don't have access to Ancestry, but perhaps someone who does can check the Drouin Collection for any Quebec BMD records that might be for your man.   Your own local library may subscribe to the free Ancestry Library Edition.  It is a great resource, so worth looking into.

RK :)

If Alfred had a brother in New York, I wonder if he might have migrated there after leaving Mr Denault? The 1930 US census is available through https://familysearch.org/ ... scroll down to United States and then scroll again to the census. There are also a number of New York records available from the same source.

I have had a quick look at the Drouin collection and nothing obvious pops up - didn't try spelling variants though.
