Tewkesbury marriage
« on: Thursday 14 June 12 09:12 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone
I would appreciate some help please.
I have an ancestor Mary Ann Hawker baptised in Tewkesbury 16-05-1802. I found a possible marriage with no sources and I have been trying to validate it.
The marriage is to Thomas Cox.
Family Search have a marriage: Thomas Cox to Anne Hawker 19-08-1821 in Tewkesbury which would be about the correct timescale.
The 1841 census shows Mary and Thomas Cox in Tewkesbury with their eldest child Thomas age 19 which fits in with the marriage date and Mary's age fits in with the census age (for what its worth!). Further census references all give Thomas' wife as Mary not Anne.
Any help or suggestions gratefully received.

Glos BMD http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/bmd/MainMenu.aspx has the births of three Cox children in Tewkesbury with mother's maiden name Hawker:
Henry 1837, James 1842, Emma 1845. This is the right family, I think (from 1841 and 1851 census), so Mary's maiden name must have been Hawker. It doesn't prove that the marriage is correct, but makes it seem very likely.

I think she calls herself Mary Ann in the 1881. Surely she is Mary Ann Cox aged 80, widowed and still living in Tewkesbury. She gives Southwick as her birthplace - that is just outside Tewkesbury. Her daughter Ann is living with her.

Yes, she's still there in 1891, definitely the same person: Mary Ann Cox, 88, retired boot binder, born Tewkesbury.

Thanks Jane.
I think that there is probably enough evidence (or as much as I am going to find)  to assume that this is the correct marriage.
I appreciate your input. Thank you very much.

Thank you Yak3.
It seems strange that someone who lived in Glover's Alley actually warranted an entry in the local newspaper, although I suppose that reaching the age of 90 was quite an achievement.
Thank you very much. I appreciate your help.
