JOHN DAVIS 1858 / JOHN DAVIS 1882
« on: Thursday 14 June 12 03:56 BST (UK) »
Hi, I think I'm best to post hear as Ireland is my last point of reference to date.

I'm looking for the birth records of John William Davis B. Ab 1882 and John Davis B. Ab 1858.

John Davis (1858) was a Private in the 105th regiment KOYLI, married Jane McCay in Clooney Parish Ireland in 1879. I believe he then served in India. His father was Thomas Davis

John William Davis (1882) Also served in India and married there to Daisy Beatrice Eates in 1907.
They had a son Lewis Manfred Davis born in 1909 in Cawnpore, India and three other children, Gwen, Hector and William.

I have searched all the British, Irish and Overseas databases, including those specific to those who served in India, but I've come up with no other information to further my search. Hoping someone might be able to help.

Thanks, Caroline

Hi,
It is a minor point but John Davis and Jane McCay were married in the Parish of Clondermot which is in the eastern side of the city of Londonderry.
They married on 26 Nov 1879 in All Saints Church of Ireland which is situated in an area of Londonderry known as Clooney.

Hi Caroline, my name is Mary Petersen (nee Menzies) from Australia. I just joined RootsChat and read your message and the reply. I am originally from Madras (now Chennai) India and came to Australia when I was very young. I am doing my Family tree and I am looking for my Great Grandfather John Davis who I think lived in Madras India and he had a daughter Emily Davis (born in 1889) who is my Grandmother. Emily (she had Red hair and very light eyes) married my grandfather James Menzies in Madras in 1907 (he lived in Wellington Nilgiris) and they had a son called Herbert James who is my Father and also had 3 daughters Rose, Daisy and Mary Menzies (my Aunties). I am not sure if there is any connection to your John Davis that you have been researching. Could you please advise me accordingly thanks very much Caroline. I have also checked the British and Overseas databases, all it says that Emily's father was a John Davis in the Marriage record for Emily Davis and James Menzies. Thanks once again. Regards Mary (Australia).

Hi Kiltaglassan, thank you. Thanks very much for your reply and the links. I am hoping this John Davis and Jane McCay are my Great Grandparents. I also know Emily Davis was in a Boarding school St. Columbans Anglo-indian High School in George-Town, Madras. She married my Grandfather James Menzies in 1907 at the age of 18yrs and my Grandfather was 29yrs old. My father Herbert said my Grandfather James had to get permission to marry my Grandmother from Lord and Lady Ampthill in England. On another note, one of my Great Great (not sure how many Greats) Grandmothers was working in Queen Victoria's court as a Lady-in-waiting or Nanny, not sure.

Thanks very much once again for your reply. Kind regards Mary.
