Barnard Beckham born 1738
« on: Thursday 14 June 12 01:58 BST (UK) »
I have traced my ancestors to Barnard Beckham (born 1738 calculated from the Parish record of his death in 1798 in Aylesham) of Norfolk.  Is anyone researching this family, and if so could perhaps suggest further lines of enquiry?

Hi veloman,

Apologies if you've already seen this - it's a memorial inscription from St Michael church, Aylsham - looks like there was a family plot.

Am I right in thinking that your Barnard/Bernard married a Susannah and had several children baptised in Aylsham?

Hello and thank you very much for your kind assistance.  Yes this is my ancestor Barnard Beckham!  We (my wife and I) were fortunate to spend a year in UK in 2004 and spent part of that time in Norfolk, doing some research on family.  We actaully visited the parish church in Aylesham and located the headstones (another of the family was located there too).  Unfortunately our search ahs come to an abrupt halt in that we just cannot seem to find any further details of Barnard.  We are trying to find his birth record, but this seems exceedingly difficult.
thanks for your assistance.  Much appreciated.
Regards,
Philip Bewley

Hi Philip,

I was curious as to why I couldn't find a baptism in Aylsham, for the Elizabeth Beckham (daughter of Barnard and Susannah) who was mentioned on the MI as having died in 1779, aged 20.

Do you have this Elizabeth's baptism details?  It might give some clues.

Do you know Susannah's maiden name?

have you looked in family search as the norfolk bmd,s registers are online and for alysham 1653-1739 and 1709-1754 , i did try looking at the first one this morning but they aren,t in the best of condition and a lot of the pages are fairly well  worn and quite in decipherable but haven,t looked at the second register .

I too started looking at the Aylsham parish registers, but it's not easy.

This site - Norfolk Transcription Archive - has transcribed many of the Aylsham PR's.
Baptisms start from 1710, marriages from 1653 and burials from 1710 - most up to 1900.
I had a good look, but the Beckhams only seem to appear in Aylsham from the 1760's, so they must have been somewhere else.

Philip, do you have Barnard and Susanna's marriage? As far as I can see, they didn't marry in Aylsham.

Hello again Trevor,
Unfortunately I do not have the marraige of Barnard and Susannah - you are probably correct in saying that they didn't marry in Aylesham.  I did do a fairly comprehensive search of Aylesham records but turned up nothing. Although my research was done at the Norwich Records Centre using microfiche indexes and then taking copies of microfilmed documents.  I could well have missed something.  Which brings me to the question as to whether or not I ought to have checked other spellings for mis-transcription?
Thanks again,
Philip
