Kinlochbervie- Alexander MacRae

I am looking for info on Alexander MacRae married to Lucy Ross.
He was deceased Pre 1863( son's Marriage) His death didn't show on Scotlands people so probably pre 1855.
Son was Based in Kinlochbervie, Sutherland as a shoemaker so I imagine family are from here?
Later generations are Scottish free Church.

There's only one family with an Alexander McRae (not MacRae) as father in Eddrachilles 1841.  His wife isn't Lucy though the name is down as Fairley McRae.

Yes there is an earlier Wm born in 1823 and the second Wm born 1825.

That may suggest Alexander's father's name to be William.

Barbra born in 1827 (perhaps Barbara could be Fairly/Fairley's mother's name)

Duncan born 1829

All baptised ASSYNT

It is the Fairly I want the other name is another side ..OOps.
I have Fairly on 51/61 census Later but I couldn't read the place name without local knowledge.

I have been To the Kinlochbervie area where they ended up, but am not sure where Assynt is ..I'll have to get the atlas out

I Saw William, Alexander and Marion/Merian on Later census but the others are new
I am pretty sure Barbara and Duncan are Fairly's parents.

Hi Sally,
Generally speaking, Assynt is the parish south of Eddrachillis. I suggest you look for "Lochinver" or "Loch Assynt" on a map, or you Google for it.

Yes I thought Barbara and Duncan were likely Fairley Sinclair's parents names but though I searched I couldn't find them, my next thought was they were probably Free Church?

ETA Remember to allow 5 years higher ages for the 1841 census ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 or 0.

The Free Church wasn't established until 1843  so the lack of any info on them is most likely to be because the Assynt records only start in 1798 - see GROS for details. I've had the same problem with Lochbroom records (immediately to the south)

They were free church I think as  I know of 2 grandsons free church ministers.  I'm new to Scottish history but I'd like to trace if this is their original area or if they moved there in clearances from elsewhere in Sutherland.
What is GROS?
