I hope this doesn't sound nitpicky, but I wanted to mention that the term "real grandfather" has the potential to rub people the wrong way.  I'm an adoptee, and the people who raised me are my real parents.  The people who conceived me are my biological parents.

Back to the subject at hand - there are various census records and transcriptions up to the year 1940 available for free at www.familysearch.org, so you might want to try looking around there and seeing if there are any likely matches.  Keep in mind that Jack may be a nickname for John or something else.

There are some military links at http://www.militaryindexes.com/ that may be helpful.
