GLASGOW .. Western Necropolis Cemetery
« on: Wednesday 13 June 12 21:14 BST (UK) »
Greetings from New Zealand

I wonder if anyone has access to the Glasgow City Council and burial records for the Western Necropolis Cemetry.

Would like to locate a family member and have a photograph taken of the gravesite please.

William Glennie
Born 29.07.1873 .. Glasgow
Died 01/11/1956 .. Orpington, Kent

Interred in Western Necropolis Cemetery, Glasgow.

If anyone could assist please I would be most grateful.

Thank you

Alex G ;D

Hi Alex

Unfortunately, nobody has access to any of the Glasgow City Council and burial records, except for Glasgow City Council. Last time I heard, they were charging over £60GB for requests like this  :-\

Sad, I know  :-\

Correction to my blanket statement  ::) The Mitchell Library do hold a number of burial and cemetery MIs as do other main local history archives in the Lanarkshire area as a whole. However, for the period and cemetery you are looking at, likely Glasgow City Council records are main source.

A chink of light perhaps that you can persue maybe at your local LDS centre in NZ....

Just found this link: www.londonfhc.org/content/catalogue?p=Scotland,Scotland,Lanark,Glasgow&f=1

Details film/records held by the LDS with specific film no's. There is a section on the Western Necropolis Cemetery. Make sure you also click on the 'View Additional Films in this Collection That Can Be Ordered for Viewing at the Centre' as this expands the list substantially.

Not sure how practical this may be for you to consider and how close a LDS centre may be but worth considering if at all possible?

If you are still stuck I could go to the Mitchell library and check the records (they are being put onto computer records bit by bit) individually and saunter along to the cemetary if you like.  No trouble, a very kind person did the same for my aunt and uncles grave in Wellington - know what it means.

Good Morning

Thoughtful and kind of you to pick up on this one for me.   I would appreciate knowing where the gravesite is located and obtaining a photograph.  Can possibly manage a photograph through Momento-Mori once I know where to locate the gravesite but the difficulty as you alluded to is accessing the records at the Mitchell Library.

My wife and I will be visiting Glasgow in April of 2013 and that is another option to obtain a photograph.

This information of my family member was obtained from a death notice in the Glasgow Herald Newspaper.

Once again thank you.
