Carrie,

If you were considering having a look through the existing microfilms - The Mitchell don't have any Burial Records for the Western Necropolis.

As for the 'digitising' project - that's been the story for a good few years now and I haven't heard if anything is actually anywhere near being accessible. Apparently although all the filming has been done, no-one quite knows how to index it!!  ::)

I know you can access information as I have been able to get plots for burials, I have family through my brother-in-law who are buried in the Necropolis and as a nurse I would sometimes spend a break there in good weather.  Admittedly I can get to the Mitchell in person I will ask next week when I am due to go about how to access information.

Hi Carrie,

Please don't think I'm being rude, but are you aware that there are 4 different Necropolii! (if that's the correct plural of Necropolis).  :-\

It wasn't until you mentioned having been a nurse and having a wander through, that it dawned on me that you may have meant 'THE' Necropolis.

'The' Necropolis, beside Glasgow Cathedral/Royal Infirmary
The Eastern Necropolis in Parkhead beside Celtic Football Stadium (sometimes called Janefield/Jeanfield)
The Southern Necropolis in the Gorbals &
The Western Necropolis at Balmore Road, Lambhill/Possil area, beside Lambhill & St. Kentigern's cemeteries.

I know there are microfilms at the Mitchell for all of them apart from the Western.

No offence taken, but I worked in a nursing home in Lambhill.  Actually have family in all of the Necropoli and am aware that Lambhill is not exactly scenic and I wouldn't advise to walk in it without someone or a car.  Scottish deerhounds help, although technically not meant to be there with one, so pretend I didn't say that last bit !! ;D

Carrie

With those comments on the Necropolis I wonder what will be the fate of a "couple of Kiwis" from the colonies when I visit in April next year ;D

Do appreciate your effort

Many thanks

Hello

I too am looking for a relative buried at the Western Necropolis.  I have just phoned the Mitchell Library.  Apparently (as previously mentioned) there is a long running digitisation project underway.  The lady in the Archives that I spoke with had no idea when it would be completed but until that time no original registers OR films are available for the Western Nec.  I too am visiting Glasgow in April and it would have been great to find this grave  >:(

Hello there

I have not progressed further on this one and remain a little sad.  Never mind when I am there in from 1st - 3rd May at less I can visit the  Western Necroplis and say I did my best.  I will be staying with a great grand son in the South of France so that will deflect some of my disappointment.

Just about got all our bookings and tickets and ready to go now via California and New York !!

Enjoy your visit to Glasgow

Alex G ;D

Hi Alex

Sorry to hear you have not been able to progress things further.  It's a shame.  Do enjoy your time in the south of France with your g-grandson!

I am looking forward to my visit to Glasgow as well.  Planning a visit to The Tenement http://www.nts.org.uk/Property/Tenement-House/ in order to show my children how my Dad and his family lived.  I've also booked my tickets on the Hop-on-Hop off Bus which looks a great way to see the City   http://www.citysightseeingglasgow.co.uk/

All the best   :)
