St Johns Preston Lancs (1816)

Hi There
I am stuck on a marriage of two ancestors - I want to find the fathers of bride and groom for the following :-
Marriage: 9 Oct 1816 St John, Preston, Lancashire, England
Solomon Gardner - Bachelor of this Parish
Mary Ann Eiden - Spinster of this Parish
    Witness: Jane Hodgson?; Thomas Eltham?; James Hatch
    Married by Licence by: William Towne Curate
    Register: Marriages 1813 - 1817, Page 246, Entry 158
    Source: LDS Film 94014
What is the best way for me to do this?  I have found the couple in census records and it shows Mary Ann as born in Topsham Devon and John Solomon Gardner as born inb Garstang.  I am unsure as to where and how to proceed with this search and how would I get to see an original record as opppsed to the transcribed record?

The LDS film may be a film of the original record - in which case you can order it on line from the LDS site and view it at your local LDS centre when it arrives. They usually let you know.

Failing that Lancashire Archives (formerly Lancashire Record Office) probably have the original registers. However, as has already been mentioned - parents names are not necessarily shown at this time.

Your next step would be to look for a birth for the groom on either Lancs On line Parish Clerk site;

www.lan-opc.org.uk OR on the Family Search site.

For the bride -- check if Devon have an On Line Parish Clerk site (you can go to 'Links' on Lancs On Line Parish Clerks) -- or again just check Family Search.

You could try and get a copy of the marriage bond and allegation. According to Lancat Lancashire Record Office website they have it.

Hi All
Thank you so much for this - searching pre 1837 is new for me!  Gibel I am asking a stupid question now but what is a marriage bond and allegation?  Is this the same as a normal marriage certificate?  I can see they were married by licence s opposed to banns so am unsure of what it means to married by licence and why a licence and not banns.
I continue to learn a lot and will definitely be trying to get a copy of this marriage bond and allegation so huge big thank you )

Hi Marina,
   Mary Ann Eiden is actually Mary Ann Newton Haydon---parent John/Ann---her baptism is on familysearch website at Topsham---how she got to Preston i still havent worked out----she is my great great grandmother,
   i presume being from topsham she would have an accent that was strange to Preston--they wrote the name as it was pronounced

I have  acopy of the marriage licence now which is quite good .  Mary Ann Newton Haydon is my 3rd Great Grandmother.  I've seen the baptism record on FamilySearch and wonder how to get a copy of the original document?
A lot of folk tell me that there is a link through to William the Conquerer on Mary Ann's mother's side.  I am informed her mother was Ann Skinner but want to try and track this so I can see the connections?  Am I just making life harder for myself but where is the fun in this if I can't get to rummage in cenetaries and records )  Love sharing tips and learning more though so tips/pointers are always good.  Just finding the link to good old Willie the Conq hard to believe.
Maybe a trip to Devon is needed though I am still looking for Mary Ann's husband's ancestry as well.  Newton is an unusal middle name and why did she come all the way from Devon to Preston?  Oh the mystery.....

Hi Marina,
   yes have heard the story of the William the conqueror bit.....i would like more proof before i believed it..
   there is a marriage on familysearch of a John Haydon and Anne Skinner---but there are at least three or four possible candidates to be our Ann Skinner---
  have you managed anything on the Gardner side
