Hi,Im trying to trace the birthplace of Ellen Whelan,I believe she may have been born in the Baltinglass area.
If possible I would like to also find out the parish she may have lived in.

Do you have an approximate year of birth for Ellen ?

It might be worth starting your search with her marriage record, as that would give you additional details such as the name and occupation of her father and her address at the time..

Since the place of birth sounds a little uncertain, I'd follow up the marriage to be sure about father's name. There could be several Ellen Whelan's born around the right time.

The district of Baltinglass covered areas in counties Carlow and Kildare in addition to Wicklow. These are the various possibilities for the surname in the district :

   Whelan births, Baltinglass district, 1893 to 1897

Have you checked the census returns for possible matches ?

I have had a look at the link i the one i thought may fit is the Mary Ellen.The other things i know about the family is that they appear on the 1911 census in Carlow.
    The head of house is John Neill stepfather.
                                Margared Neill mother.
                                 Thomas Whelan.
                                 Ellen Whelan.   
                                Margared Whelan.

My greatgrandmother was Bridget Whelan from Baltinglass who had a sister Ellen. They also had a sister Anne and a brother Paddy. She may have been Mary Ellen there has been some confusion in what my grandmother wrote down. Their mother was also Bridget. I would have to look up the father's name. I believe Ellen may have married a Reilly but again I would have to check. Any of this sound right?

I posted yesterday and I was a little mixed up between the families. I looked up some info last night. and this is what we have.
My great grandmother was Bridget Whelan from Baltinglass. She was born around 1873. We believe her sister (Mary) Ellen married Denis Harcourt and that she died around 1949 age 72. Making her born around 1877. From what we have gathered their children went to the UK. There was also a brother Patrick born around 1872. And there was a sister (Mary) Anne who had two children Joseph and Patty. We don't know her DOB. We believe their father was Michael Whelan and his wife was Bridget Whelan.
Michael Whelan's brother was Christopher and he was also married to a Bridget. They lived in Rathcoole and also had a daughter Ellen. It was this Ellen who married into the Reilly family.

Hi,Sorry for the delay in responding to you both,Shane as yet i have not located the marriage or date but i have an aunt who may be able to help with this.
 Gillbean my grandmother`s husband was a chap named Michael Donohoe,so I'm not shore that there is a connection,also i believe it is possible that either she was born out of wedlock or that her father died earlier in her life,she did have one sibling i know of his name was Thomas Whelan he died in the early months of W.W.1,i also know that he served with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers.
If any of this sounds familiar i would like to hear from you again.
