Johnny Taylor b 1889 Kensal Green, Middlesex. I have only found him on 1911 census with grandparents. What registration district should I look in to find his birth

hi Lavina

It should be registered at Kensington or at a real push, Hendon if it was towards Willesden. Depends where in Kensal Green he was born.

hi lavinia

there are two possible entries in freebmd.org:

john taylor born q1 1889 hendon v3a p171

john taylor born q3 1889 chelsea (kensington & chelsea) v1a p353.

if you can find him on the 1891 or 1901 census the address might give you a clue.

Out of those two, I would favour the Hendon one - at that time Kensington was seperate from Chelsea, so less likely.

Thanks for your replies.
I was going with Hendon until I saw Carol's reply!

On the 1911 census, 2nd April, John was 22 years old.

If he had been born in Chelsea q3, would he have been 21 on the census. I just can't work it out.

I can not find him or his father John, b 1871 Bury St Edmonds, after 1891.

It's obviously possible that people are born away from home (a) in a hospital or (b) at relatives and also that they give the place they remember being at from a very young age as their place of birth on a census.
However, I would still favour Hendon, having looked at the descriptions of the registration areas.

Hi Lavinia

It rather depends whether he was born legitimately or illegitimately. Illegitimate people in an era when there were no checks in the system usually hid their illegitimacy on their marriage and gave a father's surname the same as their own. They often gave their 'father' the same first name as theirs or one of the other male members of their immediate family, or the actual first name of their real father if they knew it. If you haven't found Johnny's birth certificate or John Taylor born Bury St Edmunds in 1871 on censuses after 1891 what evidence are you using that they were father and son?
If you can't tack John Taylor born 1871 have you been able to track all his sisters on censuses from 1891 onwards? John Taylor born 1871 Bury St Edmunds seems to be still at home with his parents in Suffolk unmarried?

Regards

Valda
