Thos Latham (sp?)
« on: Monday 11 June 12 20:14 BST (UK) »
I have a thomas Latham in my tree, listed as born in Horsley Northumberland according to the 1861 census, when he was living in south Shields.

I cannot find any record of his birth. I have searched for Lathem / Lathan / Lathen / Leatham / Laytham / Lotham

Nearest I can get to is a Thos Leatham listed in lowick in 1851.

Anyone got any ideas how I can tie him down?

Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome,
Have you tried looking for the other children to see where they were registered?  I can't see them in 1851 at the moment.  The name in 1861 looks like Lathan so mis-spelling is a likely problem.  It was not compulsory to register births until the mid 1870s so they may not have registered him.

There are two possible births in Hexham in 1849 so it will be worth checking those.

Horsley comes under Hexham registration area.   I did see two possible Thomas Latham/Lathan in the census so you will have to be careful to get the right one.   One birth was Thomas Rutherford Latham  Jul 1849 ref 25 305 and the other was just Thomas Latham  Jul 1849 ref 25 306.

Maybe cousins?

Hi again

Sorry, didn't give enough info...

The Thos I am looking for was listed as 40 in 1861, making his DOB 1821.

The name seems to be very common in the latham/lathen/lathan tree - there's at least one in every generation.

The Thos I am looking for was listed as 40 in 1861, making his DOB 1821.

But in 1851 his age is given as 36, making his date of birth 1815!

Horsley was a Township of Ovingham Parish.

There is a Thomas Lathan baptised at Ovingham in 1818. Son of Michael and Catherine.

Michael & Catherine (entered as Leathen) were living in Horsley in 1841, and Michael was a Mason, as was your Thomas. (HO 107 / 841 / Book 7 / Folio 5 / Page 7 )
