Look up Please - NSW Police Gazette 1872 - 1882

Hello All,

Hoping someone here may have access to NSW Police Gazette.

Looking for any further details regarding George HUMPHRIES. So far known:

 "Information is requested respecting George Humphreys, a sailor, who was last heard of in the month of January 1872, when he was discharged from the barque Rotumah in Sydney.  Information to the Inspector General of Police."

George was married in Victoria in 1852 and died there in 1882. He seemed to "disappear" after the birth of his last child in 1872, so the above information explains some  

Hoping something further is in the NSW Police Gazettes.

You will have noted of course that the spellings of the surname are inconsistent between the BDM registrations and the Gazette item.

This birth leads me to assume he married SARAH FRENCH

 Hello Sparrett,

Yes, surname does change between various records. He was actually born HUMPHRIS from what can be so far ascertained.Most Australian records use the HUMPHRIES spelling

Yes, his wife was Sarah FRENCH.

I am lucky to have most of the data of this couple filled in, including their offspring etc.

I am trying to piece together a period that George disappeared and his wife appearred to become a woman of "other means".

Yes, George was variously labourer, seaman, stevedore, sailor through different parts of his life.

The reference in italics above is from a Victorian Police Gazette recently supplied to me by a private researcher. I'm keen to know if anythinf further was written up in the NSW Police Gazette in reference to George's where-abouts/activities in the time frame between then and his death back in Victoria in 1882.

Hi again Sparrette,

I can see your reference to John HUMPHRIES birth. However, John was born 8th January 1872. Registration only happened on 15th January 1873.

I've pretty well got this group covered now. Don't want to waste anyone's time looking up BDM's etc.
 
Just keen to know if NSW Police Gazettes hold any new info based on the italics noted above.

I can't see anything listed for him in the NSW Police Gazettes under any variation of the surname.

The one in your original post above from the Victorian Police Gazette is dated 5 May 1874.

Thank you for checking the NSW Police Gazette.

Yes, the first is from 1874 VIC Gazette.

So, who know's what he was up to! Nothing found so far in newspapers for the time frame either.

He died in a Benevolent Asylum in Hotham. Death certificate mentions parents and origins correctly, but knows nothing of marriage or children - though virtually all were alive and living not that far away.....wouldn't it be nice to have a crystal ball sometimes?

Have you checked his records for the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum which are available at the Manuscripts Section of SLV?
There is good information found in them
