carruthers in sunderland
« on: Sunday 10 June 12 23:56 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

The 1841 UK census shows Christopher and Jane carruthers both born 1777, a daughter Jane born c1814 and her child Christopher b 1839 all living in vine street, bishopwearmouth, (sunderland)  I am unable to find a marriage for Christopher and Jane which could be anything from 1795 to 1813 at a guess, they were not from Durham it seems, possibly from Dumfries or Cumbria, at an outside guess Northumberland?  Anyone with any thoughts or information on their marriage or place of birth would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.  Malcolm.

Thank you maplea, and CarolW,

I have concerns with Jane Hotchin, if memory serves she is from Yorkshire?  I have looked at her before and am not convinced she is a positive match.  Likewise I have looked at Jane Hodgson in the past, if this is the right family I would have thought Margaret b1823 would still at 16 years of age, be with the family when Jane gave birth to her son in Vine street.  Though not completely convinced they are the right family I will keep them as a very good possibility, perhaps if I concentrate on the children  and work back I may find some success one way or another.  The 1841 census only shows two Christopher's and two Jane's living in Vine Street, I feel sure Jane 1809 died as did John, only to be replaced by another John and another Jane in 1814 which would fit with my Jane, the strange thing is there is a change of mothers name to one of the children then back to Jane which is very confusing!!

As for Christopher's birth in Dalton 1776, this is worth tracking, if I can find he marries a Jane I will be 99% sure I have found the right man, so a big thank you for this little gem.  Malcolm.
