John Hay Duncan
« on: Sunday 10 June 12 19:19 BST (UK) »
Any help appreciated.

David Duncan, born 1799 Cants Mill, Kingoldrum, Angus , married Elizabeth Hay, born 1799 Couper Angus, Angus had three children:  William, Ann and John Hay.

I  have not been able to ascertain what happened to John Hay Duncan other than what is in a photocopy of a letter as follows:

"Dundee, May 3rd 186(?)
Dear Sir, Having read the following in the Peoples Journal of Saturday last and not sure but it might have reference to your brother I send it to you as it appeared:[/i][/i][/i]

- In the list of the crew of the Lord Delaval, of Sheild, which left Constantinople for Shields on the 10th Nov last, and has not since been heard of, two of the crew belong to the quarter:- Jphn McQueen, seaman, native of Dundee; and John Duncan. Carpenter, native of Perth. -

You will be as good as return me an answer as soon as you get this . I remain Dear Sir your affectionate Friend, James Duncan.

45 Cotton Road, Dundee."

How can I find out if he returned to Scotland by other means.  Or did he come to an untimely end?
Regards,
Dunlata

Hi,

The following appeared in the Colonist newspaper (New Zealand) on the 31st July 1860.

Loss of Four Ships, with All Hands.—Among the many casualties that have been reported at Lloyd's are four ships missing, and there appears, we regret to say, very little doubt but they have foundered, and all hands belonging to them lost. The facts are briefly told. The barque Isabella Kerr, Captain Hugh Murray master, left Demerara for Liverpool on the 23rd of last December, and nothing has since been heard of her. The underwriters have paid the insurance effected on the ship and cargo, having no doubt in their minds that she is gone. She was 442 tons register, and classed A 1 for nine years. Her crew numbered thirteen hands, most of whom belonged to the north of England. The second ship was the Lord Delaval, of North Shields. She sailed from Constantinople for Glasgow on the 10th of last November, and nothing has been heard of her since. She was commanded by Captain John Hedley, whose family are residents of London. The crew numbered ten in all. The third case is that of the Whim, Captain Johnson, which sailed for Dublin on the 9th of March with a cargo of 2460 cases of brandy; and the fourth missing ship is the Robert Kelly, a liner, trading between Liverpool and New York, neither of which has been heard of since they sailed.
