GILLESPIE, DAVID (d 1862): was described as a neutral tailor in St Andrews when he was adm to the Tailor Incorp, 24 Aug 1805, "in consequence of the authority of the Convener's Court; served as Deacon in 1810-12; Pigot (1825 and 1837) lists him in South Street, but by 1852 he had moved to Castle Street; app: Alexander Lorimer (1807); John Wood (1807); David Patie (1814); Alexander Melville (1820); he was known locally as the "Convener," for he was twice Convener of the Incorporated Trades (latterly, 1835-47), and, being the last person to hold that office, was allowed to keep the gold medal, the property of the Trades, which was got up in c 1822 at a cost of #32; was an active and energetic politician of the Liberal Party, and served on the Town Council for 2 periods before the Reform Act, and also from 1846-56; he gave up business around 1856, and went to live with a married daughter at Craigend Parish, Dunbarney, Perthshire, where he died Dec 3 1862; m 1806 Helen Aikman, and had 3 sons and 6 daughters; his yst son, Captain David Gillespie (d Feb 13 1873 aged 48), was a master mariner and emigrated to Victoria, Australia, in 1865
