Drowning in Ro-wen (Roewen)
« on: Saturday 09 June 12 13:23 BST (UK) »
I have in my possession a painting by the artist Benjamin Fisher of "Pen y Rhiw Troed" dated 1898.

I have understood that the building in the photo is of the present day post office in Ro-wen and in it you can see a woman walking down past the location towards a pond at the foot of the incline. The pond is no longer there, but the field is known locally as Cae Llyn.......Lake Field. I have also been told that the woman in the painting lost a child through drowning in the pond and, rather ghoulishly I suppose, I am asking the experts out there does anyone know whether there is any validity to the story?

All I have is that the painting is dated 1898 and that it is in Ro-wen!

I would be very grateful to hear if anyone has any ideas.

Diolch.

Hi there,

I've received some confirmation that there was a drowning and that it would have been......possibly....in the 1920's! The pond fed a nearby mill, I've been told, and it was dried up/emptied in the 1950's. My source said he'd get back to me after I'd put an article in the local Welsh language paper, but have not heard anything for a couple of months now.

Any help would be greatly and gratefully received.

Diolch.
