SALT CREEK, Yankalilla, South Australia

I am trying to locate Salt Creek at Yankalilla, in particular, where it feeds into the ocean.  A google maps aerial shot didn't help me much - but it does show Salt Creek Road,  not very close to the water.  This is an attempt to confirm a family story that my sailor ancestor met his wife when he and shipmates came ashore for fresh water on their way to Port Adelaide, probably from the U.K. probably 1885-1886.  The sailor was George Donald PERRY, his wife was Jane ROADS of the ROADS and BOWYER families of YANKALILLA.  Thanks, Jennifer

Salt Creek road does seem to follow a creek though doesn't it - and if you follow the creek down stream it seems go along Hey Flat road to feed the creek which goes into the ocean almost in the middle of town!    Don't know  - not a local - but that's what it looks like!

Actually I'm just looking at the Google map same as you - but there is another creek entering the sea on the south side of town - and following that up it seems to cross Salt creek road a few kms out of town.   Sorry  - not helpful - but I do love maps!!

Thank you, a much clearer view!   I think I'll use that site for other map searches.  The creek wanders all over the place but it's pretty clear where it meets the salt water and that it is the right creek even if one loses track of it in a couple of places.   WigglyHobbes, I've checked out the other creek but think the one in Normanville is the better candidate.  The southern one is still a possibility - there are houses in proximity.  I think I need to do a streetview search and look for signposts crossing the two creeks.  Thanks again, Jennifer

I have just tripped over your post re Salt Creek and would you believe, I am currently staying at The Links Resort at Lady Bay, about 1 km. from Salt Creek!! We are spending a few days here to research my ancestors who had wheat property on Salt Creek road in the late 1800s.
Salt Creek itself is quite small and would be dry for a lot of the time (not now, as it's bucketing down).
The fresh water that you mention would probably have been from the Bungala river which enters the seat at Normanville.
I managed to locate the property that my ggg grandfather settled on in 1840 - unfortunately it's now just an open wheat paddock with no building remains or any evidence of them left.
I live at Seaford in South Australia which is about 30 minutes drive from here.

Hi Jennifer,
Do you have access to the book "To Find the Way" by RF Williams?
There is a section on the Roads family of Thomas and Mary Roads and there eight children arriving in Adelaide on the Trafalgar in 1849. After finding gold the family moved to Yankalilla. It includes a family photo of George ( a son of the above) and Susannah (nee Bowyer) Roads and family. I have a copy and can share the details with you if you wish.

 If you have not already done so a trip into the information centre on Main road Yankalilla might give you access to the above book. The book has records of many early families in the district.
Do you know where your ancestors are buried? I live very near Salt Creek road and we have an early settlers cemetery on our property. I have many names of those buried there.

I called in there on Monday and had good discussions with the volunteers there. We checked that book, but unfortunately the Osbornes weren't listed.
Do you have any information re them??
They lived at the corner of salt creek and hay flat roads I reckon.
I don't know where Michael Osborne and his wives Ann & Fanny are buried. Michael & Ann's son Henry and his wife Mary are buried at Edithburgh - the birthplace of my mum and her parents.

Hello everyone!  I apologise for not answering before - I don't appear to have received the usual notification in my emails.  I don't have access to "To Find the Way" but I do have a copy of "Roads Across the Oceans" By Douglas Roads Maschmedt and I think the photos you mention are the same as the ones in this book.  Am always interested in gathering more information and possibly clearer images.  Also very willing to reciprocate with information from the book I have which is quite extensive - 163 pages.  My Roads connection is Frank Roads and wife Eliza Bowyer, whose daughter Jane married George Perry.  Thank you for the description of the area I am interested in - it puts everything into better context - and HEY - in getting out the book I realised the inside back cover is the original survey of Yankalilla (can't see a date) so will happily scan that and send it if anyone is interested.  It does have some Roads properties outlined but doesn't differentiate between the Roads family members.  There are some Roads blocks on Bungala River, also one directly on the waterfront so both are possibilities for the property I am looking for.  I will send a personal message with my email address.   Jennifer
