From "Historic Hastings" (J.M. Banes, 2nd Ed., 1963, Appendix V, p. 362) detailing some public houses.
The Fortune of War was built by Thomas Sinnock, who bought the land then known as "Shelves", owing the Manor of Ore a quitrent of 2s. 9d., in 1810, some time before 1824 when Thomas Henbrey of Ore owned it.
Plate XVIII from the above ref. shows a drawing of Sinnock Square in 1843; I have not reproduced it here because I am unsure of copyright restrictions.
