Berwick area estates?
« on: Thursday 07 June 12 13:05 BST (UK) »
i am trying to find out where and if Estate/Manor records are availible for the Scremerston and East Ord areas during the C18th and C19th? I have found out that Greenwich hospital owned land in Scremerston and has records in the Nat archives? Has anyone seen them? I would be looking for rent lists which enables you to identify people working on these estates and where they lived.

There are several boxes of documents relating to East Ord and in particular the Grieve Family at the Berwick Record Office. Unfortunately because of my limited time there (not the fault of anyone there) I was unable to explore them fully.

thanks lilym, will add those to my documents to look at. thought there must be a manor or estate at Ord. Where i am in E Yorks there are some fantastic manorial documents and hoped that there might be something similar in N Northumberland

The last estate owner at Ord was Lady Osborne of Ord House. Whether there are any records I know not.

Just seen your query.  Until fairly recently the Greenwich Estates had an office at Belford & I believe they had archives there.  I'm not sure who is now the local land agent, but if you're still looking I can find out in next few days. I also know a number of Scremerston born people & may be able to help with specific names.
