Marriage lookup
« on: Thursday 07 June 12 12:33 BST (UK) »
I have been looking for the marriage of Isaac RODDIS to Susannah ?? for many years. The couple lived in Northampton town and had children baptised from 1741 at St Sepulchre. Isaac was a basketmaker and was born in Flore in 1715.
Susannah's maiden name has eluded me for 20+ years and it would be great to complete this branch back to 1580s

Cheers

There is a marriage on FindMyPast
RODDIS to TINDELL
22nd September 1735
but unfortunately doesn't give bride/grooms forenames or place of marriage

Thank you for checking this marriage. I can see a marriage of William RODDIS to Sarah TINDEL 23rd Sept 1735 at St Botolph Bishopsgate, London.

Obviously not an Isaac marrying a Susannah, but do appreciate your time and trouble.

I can confirm that there's no sign of an Isaac ROD(D)IS(S) marrying a Susannah on the Northamptonshire Marriage Index (1700-1837).

This surname also seems to have the variants RADISH, RADHOUSE and RODHOUSE (these have also been checked on the NMI) and are concentrated in the adjacent villages of Weedon Bec, Flore and Heyford.

FreeREG has a burial for a Susannah RODDIS at Flore on 29 OCT 1788.

There does seem to be some connection between this family and St. Sepulchre at Northampton.  In 1728 a Thomas RADISH "of Flour" (sic) married there, and I have come across several other later similar marriages.

Incidentally, how do you know Isaac's birth year and place?

Hi Pennie,

Many thanks for your input on this request.
I know that Isaac RODDIS came from Flore because he was apprenticed to a basket maker in Northampton, with the premium being paid by the parish. Specifically mentioning that he came from that parish. He later took on a younger brother as an apprentice, with the parish paying again.

I am directly related to Isaac as well as his younger brother James who was baptised at Flore in 1718. There were at least twelve siblings, hence the poverty and the parish stepping in to pay for the brothers apprenticeships.
Best wishes

P.S. I also have the CD of Nths marriages 1700-1837

Hi

This may be a long shot

I have done a one name search on Familysearch for Isaac and Susannah and found

Isaac Rameth to Susannah Rogers
10 June 1740
St Andrews Plymouth Devon

Susannah may have come from that area and they married there, I have also done a one name search for the name Rameth and this is the only record for that name

Hi MargP

Well, that's as you say a long shot, but it's the best one I have seen to date. Thank you so much.
I'll open up that line of enquirey now. Plymouth is a bit further from Northampton that I would have liked but you never know. The first child of my Isaac & Susannah was baptised 14th June 1741, so that fits in pretty well.

As you can tell I have puzzled over this couple for decades and Plymouth is exactly the same distance from Bristol as Northampton is!

Very many thanks for your initiative

My pleasure, it may be worth looking at the original record, it may have been mistranscribed

Hi MargP

Yes, I have already taken your advice and looked at the original image and I read it as Isaac RAWETH. Ah well, next one please!

Best wishes
