Rev. Edward Evans, Lords Hill, Shropshire
« on: Wednesday 06 June 12 08:49 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me to discover more about my ancestor the Rev Edward Evans. He was born in 1799 and was a baptist minister at the Lords Hiii Chapel near Snailbeach in Shropshire.

All I know from my mother is that he was a pastor for 33 years and he is buried in the church graveyard. She also said that his son was the organist and there is a plaque on the wall inside the church for him. I have visited the church but was not able to go inside as it is no longer in use.  I have also found an old text by a Shropshire miner that refers to him.

Does anyone have any information on him or any photographs? I would be very greatful for any help you can give me.

Thank you

Not sure whether you have seen this previous post about Edward Evans of Lords Hill, but there is a chance that a photo does exist http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,482736.0.html

Is the text that you've found the Samuel Hughes one?

I suspect that this is Edward in 1871 RG10; Piece: 2771; Folio: 71; Page: 21  He is with his married daughter Sarah Harrison and her family and seems to have an unmarried daughter, Mary, also with them.  Edward, Sarah and Mary all handily give their birth place as Wales (narrows it down a bit!)

Sarah Evans married Jonathan Grose Harrison on April 22 1861 at St Anne's Church, Stanley, West Derby.  (cert on ancestry).  Father is given as Edward Evans, Baptist Minister

Sarah Evans in 1861 RG 9; Piece: 2735; Folio: 59; Page: 10 visiting the Holbrook family - who were witnesses on her marriage cert.  Gives POB as Newtown, Mont.

Thank you to spider monkey and cati for replying to my message. I have only just joined the roots site and have not got the hang of the technology yet. I think there is probably a better way to reply to you individually but I hope this is ok.

I did see the report from philjo and I would love a copy of the photo he has but I have not worked out how to make contact. I will try to work it out tonight.

The text was the Samuel Hughes one.

I have 2 census reports for Edward Evans. The 1841 census gives his birthdate as 1801 and lists his children as: Edward 17, Mary 14, Ann 11, Sarah 8 and Thomas 6. The 1851 census gives his birthdate as 1801. Both have him as a baptist minister at Lordshill, Snailbeach which is a tiny area so I am sure it is the. Same man. I am a descendant through Thomas and has daughter Edith Clara (known as Clara). I have lots of photos of Clara but none of Thomas or
Edward.

Thank you for all your replies

If you click on the link that I gave you, it brings up the thread and philjo is the first poster on that thread.  There is a green scroll underneath his name, by clicking on the scroll it enables you to send a personal message to him.  He doesn't appear to have been on here since March, but he should get an email notifcation telling him that he has a message.
