I agree Dundee ….  Plenty of Emigration records have differences in the ages of the passengers, and in the order of the given names.   I doubt there was much difficulty for a lass born either 1820 or 1822 to have been approached by an Emigration Agent to come to New South Wales and to have willingly agreed to come.

I think the variations in the surname (Burge/Barge/Budge) are simply due to the usual transcription and literacy issues for that era, and similar thoughts re the given names for his wife, although she may well have been usually known by her middle name, as many were in those times.

I also think another odd comment is “Some of the children reverted back to the BUDGE name when it was time for them to marry”.

I think they used the surname BUDGE during their childhood, and they offered that surname to the clergy when marrying.  I do continue to think it was simply wrongly recorded or wrongly transcribed, particularly at NSW BDM indexes prepared decades and decades after their births.  All those records were written in longhand until the NSW BDM received its first typewriter in the early 20thC.  So, back pre the typewriter the various clerks in any office (church or secular) recording the information had various literacy levels  and may well have either misheard or misunderstood the surname due to either their own accents or to the accents of either Daniel or his wife.    I think the 1861 birth of Alfred should list all the older living siblings, and that may help confirm some of the info at that website.  (NSW BDM #10823, Alfred S, son of Daniel and Elizabeth M, registered Parramatta district).

I do realise that  the 1870 NSW Electoral Roll for THE LACHLAN does have Daniel BURGE, along with a Daniel Burge junior, and a James Burge, and a William Burge all qualifying to enrol as residence Carregabal.    The rolls were prepared by Police Magistrates at those times, and the Police District for that locality was FORBES.

When a clerk recorded a name in any ledger, even when the informant was present, it is, at least to me, significant to remember that the page faces the clerk, and thus is usually “upside down” to the informant.   The longhand differences between Budge, Barge, Burge are thus not as obvious to the informant at the time the clerks are recording the information.   If the informant’s literacy level is also taken into account, then it becomes apparent that no one was setting out to deceive or to hide behind a change in the surname or the given name/s.   I think the “jump ship” story could be conjecture offered back  several generations ago to offer an interesting and romantic story for the young children.

I note that there  is just one death registration for 1888 that I have found that matches up to the comments on that website   “Daniel died in November 1888 of Senility and Dementia, at Gladesville Asylum for the Insane in Sydney. He was admitted to the Asylum after becoming lost in the bush for 3 days in the Grenfell District. Daniel died after about 12 months in the Aslyum”   It was registered at Ryde  #8839.  It seems to match up to the info I posted at reply # 1 re Probate for a Daniel BUDGE DD (date of death) 6 Nov 1888.  The surname is BUDGE at the online index at NSW BDM.

Cheers,  JM

Ummm  ???   I think the surname was BUDGE in the 1840s ....

From the historic records section of the website https://beta.familysearch.org/
William Bridge, born 11 May 1843, baptised 26 Nov 1843, at Hunter’s Hill, parents Daniel and Matilda
Mary Ann Budge born 25 June 1845, baptised 28 Sept 1845 at Hunter’s Hill, parents Daniel and Matilda
James Burge born 26 Jan 1848, baptised 16 Jul 1848 at Parramatta, parents Daniel and Matilda
George Thomas Burge born 11 Oct 1855, baptised 4 Nov 1855 at Parramatta, parents Daniel and Elizabeth Matilda

From  NSW BDM online index
1843 William Budge,  Vol 27A, line 3789, son of Daniel and Matilda
1845, Mary A Budge, Vol 30A, line 1174, dau of Daniel and Matilda
1848, James Burge, Vol 33A, line 8973, son of Daniel and Matilda
1855 George T Barge, Vol 42B, line 3469, son of Daniel and Elizabeth M

It would be interesting to see what the details are for that Vol 27A and the 1843 entries …..  Line 3789 should be for William BUDGE and line 3799 should be for William BRIDGE…. And both sets of parents recorded as Daniel and Matilda…...
