How do I research for ships crew 1840? COMPLETED

According to family history, Daniel BUDGE arrived in Australia at Sydney on 9/11/1840 aboard the barque "Royal Consort"; and he was the ship's carpenter.  Can someone offer guidance on how I can research and confirm that he was a member of the crew and that he was a ship's carpenter?
(He married Elizabeth Matilda RICHARDS who was a passenger on the "Royal Consort").

The NSW State Records online index has a Daniel BUDGE of Grenfell, DD 6 Nov 1888, duty paid 25 Sept 1889.  You can order a copy of that file via their online option.  Deceased Estate files can sometimes be quite informative, and include witness statesments, the will, copies of BDM documents, land grants etc.  (and land grants/applications etc can include the name of the arrival ship !)

I have just had a look at the passenger list and searched on Mariners records, no Royal Consort list for 1840 on there. Elizabeth was on board though, I wonder if he changed his name?

Thanks everyone for your assistance. 
I have the "history" but I am now "verifying" the history.  It's been a long journey and there are family trees on sites that include my ancestors (in error) and there are names on NSW BDM that were transposed incorrectly such as Edward became Edwin, Clarice became Clarence. 
I have the names and dates and places but as in Daniels case, I am trying to verify why he changed his name from BUDGE to BURGE and the jump ship story.
I have found a web site run by well known company that appears to have the info I need and I will pay for the details.

The NSW State Records Office currently has non exclusive partnership arrangements with at least two commercial web based family history organisations for SOME of their archives, but NOT all of their archives.    However, the NSW SRO's are still free to search at their reading rooms, and their indexes are still online at this free to search link.  http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/collection-search

I doubt if Daniel actually set about to alter the spelling of his surname from BUDGE to BURGE.  To me this change in the spelling is most likely because he lived in an era where the literacy skills of the clerks was not a significant issue to their contemporaries, and where much was recorded in long hand.  For example, the NSW BDM entries that you find online at their INDEX website .... well that index was basically commenced by volunteers transcribing the then OLD originals in the 1930s...

May I please ask what year do you notice the alteration from BUDGE to BURGE for your Daniel ? 
Is that NOT his deceased estate in the name of Daniel BUDGE that I listed at reply #1

Here's some further info about a Daniel BUDGE.

I notice on the NSW BDM online index  that a Daniel BUDGE was the son of a Daniel and Elizabeth Matilda.  His death registration in 1937 shows as recorded in the Grenfell district.  NSW BDM #7158.

The NSW SRO has the Probate Packet for a Daniel Budge with death  of 11 June, 1937 and Probate Granted 29 July 1937.   http://investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/

I speculate that the 1937 death is for a son of your Daniel BUDGE and his wife, Elizabeth Matilda RICHARDS  whose 1841  marriage is indexed twice at NSW BDM.   

I have not found at NSW BDM any entry under either BURGE or BUDGE for the likely NSW birth for that Daniel.  However, that does not surprise me.  Firstly, the NSW BDM was not established until the mid 1850s and secondly not all the Early Church Records were made available to the Registrar General’s office.

There are some odd statements on the site that mum mum posted...

Elizabeth Matilda was actually born "Matilda Elizabeth Richards" in 1820 but "altered" details of her name and date of birth from 1820 to 1822 to enable her to transport to Australia as a Bounty Immigrant
