Regimental Cap Badge
« on: Tuesday 05 June 12 21:56 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me identify Grandfather's cap badge please.  I cannot find any records for him and think they were probably amongst those destroyed in the blitz.

He and his family had lived in St Albans area for many years and I think he  joined up soon after WW1 started.

Many thanks.

Hi Gortonboy

He was born in 1895 in St Albans (Park Street), Hertfordshire.

My father thought he was in the Herts & Beds regiment but I don't think the cap badge is correct ???

It isn't the Herts and Beds: this is their cap badge:

Continued from last post, as I am incapable of posting more than one image at a time - it looks more like the West Kents to me:

there is a medal card for an Edwin Lee of the Royal West Kent regiment,,,the card will not give family details,,just name number and medals awarded,,,,you do not need to download the card to see his numbers

Thanks Gortonboy and Cati for your swift replies.

I am not sure if this fits because the base of the badge on grandfather's photo is a different shape to the base of the West Kents cap badge.

I have seen on the websites that there is a pre 1919 cap badge for the Herts & Beds regiment but I cannot find a picture of it.

The medical record for Edwin Lee of the West Kents lists him as a Private but on his photo he has a lance corporal stripe as well as overseas service stripes.  So would he still be classed as a Private??

There is a pre-1919 Herts and Beds cap badge here:

www.northeastmedals.co.uk/british_regiment/bedfordshire_and_hertfordshire_regiment.htm

shown in comparison to the post 1919 cap badge.

You will see that the emblem - the hart wading through a stream - is the same.  The Beds and Herts did not use a rearing horse as their emblem.

Many thanks Cati for finding the pre 1919 badge.  It makes sense it is so similar but I just needed to see it.
