Help finding two convicts transported to Tasmania
« on: Tuesday 05 June 12 12:05 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to find out information as to what became of two brothers George and James Bradley. George was born in Grimesthorpe in West Yorkshire England in 1821, his brother born in the same in 1823. In January 1847 they robbed a poor fellow in Sheffield who ended up dying of his injuries. They were convicted of larceny on the 10th July 1847 at York assizes and sentenced to transportation to Tasmania for 15 years. I then completely lose them and I'm a bit rubbish when it comes to Australian records and was wondering if anyone might be able to help find what happened to them next?

Thanks for your time,

Dan Hall

Hi Dan :)

You can search for Tasmanian convicts here:
http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=11

When you find the right entry, you should be able to view at least the conduct record online - sometimes other records have been digitised, too.

Cheers
Prue

Hi,

Thanks to both of you, I did have a try on that website plucked from the links at the top of the Australia rootschat page but failed miserably in my attempts to navigate it. With your help, I think I have it figured out. I have found George on here and James too on a different ship, thanks for you quick replies and kind help.

Best regards,

Dan

That's brilliant. Looks like he settled in Australia, I knew they didn't come back to England. So from this it looks like they were shipped to the Gibraltar penal colony then on to Tasmania, and then George at least married and settled there. fascinating stuff and thanks again for everyone's help!

Just for a bit of more of Georges family history,

George and Hanna/Hannah Sale (seen it as Seal once) had a daughter named Alice Bradley. She married Adam William Sproule, the son of Adam Sproule and Maria Orpen.

Alice had 14 children by my count.
