my ancestor was a chelsea pensioner.
« on: Sunday 03 June 12 11:34 BST (UK) »
l have date of my ancestors death 27th march 1831 Horsley Debryshire
England. His name was Roger Harrison and retired from the 31st Foot regiment in 1802 aged 48yrs and served 26 yrs.

l have been trying to search for his details on ancestru .co.uk but l am not getting anywhere. The above information was from National Archives after having paid research.l am trying to find leads to his wife Catherine Harrison (her maiden name) hoping that there would have been a mention on his records of being married to her.l am aware that there is a marriage of a Roger Harrison and Elizabeth Salisbury in Chaddesden Derbyshire but l am not convinced that it is her(1841 census states Catherine Harrison lrish widow) l have hit a brickwall with her maiden name and l just don't know what to do next.l have thought of addresses that they could have lived for recieving his military pension and when he died his wife must have had to contact the Chelsea Pensioners Military Hospital of his death.?

There is a record ofmarriage to Roger Harrison and Elizabeth Harrison Chaddesen Derbyshire England 1802 but l am not convinced of this .
1841 census shows widow Catherine Harrison lrish.Catherine and Roger had 3 children?Amey,William and( Richard who could have been born in lreland)Roger and Catherine could have been married there he was in lreland 1797 and 1800 on service.
Would be grateful for your help and advice .Thankyou

Hello everyone,l have made an error with ref to Roger Harrison's Marriage l put down Catherine Harrison it should have been Elizabeth Salisbury, that was the name that didn,t match with the christian name on the baptism records of Amey Harrison and William Harrison.Mother:Catherine Harrison.

l would be grateful for information on how to find maiden names,l have hit a brick wall. ???

Hi..I haven't found the marriage yet..but I can confirm the baptisms of AMEY HARRISON 10.07.1803..and WILLIAM HARRISON 14.01.1807..at Horsley Derbyshire......which should mean that they married before 1803..and presumably in the area......but the Horsley marriage records do not have the marriage.....you say he retired in 1802 at the age of 48.....seems a good time to get married!!......but being 48, and with the suggestion that Catharine was a widow in 1841........seems to suggest that he might have a previous wedding somewhere..and he was a widower?..and Catherine was apparently born ireland c1769..so could have been widowed befroe she married Roger......so her maiden name may be two steps away..not one!

Later.........it looks as though Roger was a local man......I have a baptism for a ROGER HARRISON at Horsley 15.11.1755..son of John Harrison and Elizabeth nee Parker, who were married at Horsley 01.08.1755............but then again there is a Roger Harrison baptised Horsley 29.12.1755 son of Thomas Harrison and Sarah nee Stenson, who married at Derby ..neither would be a gamble on my mortgage..but......who knows...
